Jumbo Kindle coming this wednesday

May 4th, 2009

large_kindle_original

The rumors of a jumbo Kindle or a large screen Kindle is all over the web. The new large screen Kindle will be an alternative to newspapers and magazines. We believe that this would be Amazon’s attempt to put life in the dying newspaper industry. The Kindle e-book reader has been a grand success for Amazon and the Kindle 2 was recently unveiled for $359.

The rumors came from New York Times (NYT) and it is believed that the large screen Kindle would be in association with NYT. Interestingly NYT and Amazon refused to comment on the rumors.

Amazon has called a press conference on Wednesday. Though the invitation doesn’t say anything about the new Kindle, the news is unofficially official for most of us.

Update: It seems that the new Kindle would be called Amazon Kindle DX. It would feature a 9.7″ screen compared to the 6″ in Kindle 2. A inbuilt PDF reader and discounted rates to subscribe to the New York Times.

Kindle 2 lacks Wi-Fi though and works on the Sprint network. A interesting debate is one whether Kindle would stand alone with most consumers preferring single mobile devices that can take care of all their portable needs.

Amazon To Sell Music Without Copy Protection

May 17th, 2007

Amazon.com is reportedly launching a digital music store later this year, offering millions of songs in the DRM-free MP3 format.

With this initiative, Amazon customers would be able to play their music on virtually any personal device, including PCs, Macs, iPods, Zunes, and Zens. Besides, they would be able to burn their music collection on to CDs.

What is Digital rights management (DRM)?

As part of the deal, Amazon.com is partnering with record label EMI to offer millions of MP3-formatted songs for sale in an improved, premium format management (DRM) protection.

Jeff Bezos, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Amazon.com, said, “Our MP3-only strategy means all the music that customers buy on Amazon would always be DRM-free, and would play on any device. We are excited to have EMI joining us in this effort, and look forward to offering our customers MP3s from amazing artists like Coldplay, Norah Jones, and Joss Stone.”

The company claims they will offer songs from over 12,000 record labels through their upcoming digital music store.

The tie-up comes more than a month after EMI got into a similar agreement with Apple to sell music in the unprotected format on iTunes.
