…more signs of Google being serious about developing Android as a netbook OS and possibly a full blown Operating System for PC’s in future. Apparently Google has posted an AD on Craiglist to invite netbook users for their inputs Android for Netbooks/Laptops.
Do you use a Netbook? If so, we are currently scheduling participants for a netbook-related usability study to take place May 11-16 out of our Mountain View (or San Francisco) office .

The SkyTone netbook that we saw earlier gets a more reasonable pricing of $250 now. Previous estimates were of $100 which looked unrealistic to us. SkyTones Alpha 680, 7″ netbook has a tablet design and looks really promising with WiFi, USB ports and Android OS.
The company plans to get working prototypes by June and release the product in a few months after that. So by year end we should expect more than a few Android handhelds.

Android was the buzz last year for being the Google’s competitor to Windows Mobile and iPhone. And this year its already into the OS wars with HP, T-Mobile, Nokia and others planning netbooks powered by Android OS. So is Android developing into a full fledged Operating System? Is Google looking to compete with Microsoft head-on?
While the Android based mobiles haven’t done much damage to the WM / iPhone market share; they have set a strong alternative for manufacturers to adopt an open source mobileOS. With friendly terms and powerful backing of Google, the Android on handhelds will see a steady growth. And as predicted it might well surpass the iPhone by 2012, thanks to the number of manufacturers who have committed devices to this platform. But is Android really a ladder for Google to enter the OS market? IMO not really!
Android is a capable OS which can power PMP’s, Handhelds and Netbooks. Such that even a mobile maker like Nokia can consider entering the netbook market with Android. I really don’t see Google entering the OS market giving competition to Windows / Mac OS etc. Instead it would happily facilitate its online services like Gmail, Search, Calendar, Docs, Reader etc much easily to its audience. Google earns 95%+ revenues from online Advertising and the growth in the mobile Internet space prompts Google to enter this segment with something like Android.
Netbook users as the name suggests are heavy Internet users. Their main purpose of using a system is the Internet. Android OS on these portables would mean better than the best integration of Google’s services for Netbook users. Android is a cheap alternative for manufacturers and the very flexible one as well. If things go well with Android, pretty soon the 96% market share that Microsoft enjoys in netbooks would be under pressure.
