Apple has proudly sold 3 billion apps on the iPhone platform. But the pirated apps market is booming and estimations suggest that it has dented Apple’s revenues considerably. Had the pirated apps been purchased legally by Apple; app developers would have got an additional $450 million in revenues. For Apple alone ,considering that they charge 30% of app revenue as commission the amount of loss comes close to $140 million.
While some smart developers like Ben did fight pirated apps in a very innovative manner, Apple has largely remained silent about the issue. Though even Apple has tried its best to get Jailbreaking labeled as illegal. Hackers in any platform would also prevail, its just that Apple has to ensure that these Hackers do not take too much away from the developers by means of piracy. App Store being a key iPhone USP the issue is delicate for sure. (more…)

At first thought it seemed as if it makes sense and a few minutes into the news that Intel is preparing its own App Store for netbooks, it seems as if the iPhone App Store success has influenced the tech industry way too badly. While many players are working on their own OS and almost everyone from Acer to Samsung are jumping on the app market. Service providers like Vodafone have also jumped on this wagon. So is the apps model so strong that it would rule netbooks awell? Does it add value? aren’t there enough free Google apps that are browser based? and isn’t the FREE Chromium OS already in works?
Intel is looking at the same business model that Apple does for the AppStore, passing on 70% of the revenues to the developers. The apps would be compatible with Intel’s upcoming OS Moblin and/or Windows 7. In my opinion the iPhone targets the power users and will continue to see the App Store boom, but netbooks is a different segment altogether. There may be some traction with this, but don’t expect this to be a billion downloads App Store anytime soon

I was naturally excited about the new Blower App for the iPhone. This thing uses the iPhone speaker to blow out air that as per the app description Blow out candles, Blow herbs away, Refresh your skin during hot summer nights! And seeing the youtube video demonstrating how the app works wasn’t enough for me. So I decided to put this thing to test myself. Here is the result.

Note: I tried this with my 2G iPhone. Will try to do this with a 3G if I get a volunteer
– Video of this attempt is coming on YouTube shortly below (though the camera memory gave up on me, I have a few seconds to show).

It is not often that you find the head of a company admitting that his company’s flagship product has lost steam. So you can bet that our ears pricked up when Nintendo’s President, Santoro Iwata, admitted that the Wii – the console that had so famously rubbed the noses of PS3 and XBox 360 in the dirt -had stalled. “Games of high demand could not be continuously released and the good mood has chilled,” Iwata told Japan’s Mainichi Newspaper in an interview that has been doing the rounds of the gaming circuit. And he certainly needs to be commended for being realistic – after the initial euphoria surrounding its amazing motion-sensing gaming concept, the Wii came up short in the department that matters most for many gamers – gaming titles. And with both Microsoft and Sony promising motion sensing gameplay in the coming months, the Wii literally ran out of steam.
There are many in the tech world who believe that there are parallels between the Wii and the iPhone. The iPhone (more…)

Apple today announced a refresh to its iPods lineup, released iTunes 9 and killed all rumors for an Apple Tablet / Netbook and iPod touch with camera. The iPod nano got a video camera but the iPod touch didn’t get the microphone or camera. While this might well be a result of the technical snag rumors that claim that the iPod touch 3G was delayed due to some technical issues, I strongly feel that the camera iPod touch wouldn’t come so early as Apple would prefer to have a good difference between an iPod and the iPhone!
Here are the highlights of the event, detailed coverage coming soon. Also watch @ iPhoneHelp
- iTouch OS 3.1 released
- iPod touch becomes 50% faster, better games, 64GB version, no camera!
- No HD, but better gaming support for iTouch with OpenGL|ES 2.0
- iPod classic gets a bump to 160GB
- iPod nano 5G gets a camera, voice recorder and FM
- New iPod Shuffle in new colours
- App Store gets genius support. Suggests apps based on your liking
- 1.8bln apps sold, 75k apps live on AppStore
- 30 million iPhones sold till date, 20 million iPod Touch
- iTunes 9 released
Steve Jobs presented the keynote, he looked healthy and confirmed his liver transplant 5 months ago. Its like Superman returns for us !

Apple and AT&T have been really nasty with apps that competes / tests either of the two companies own services. Even the VOIP applications on the App Store like Skype cannot use the AT&T’s 3G network to make calls. Such a policy has been put in place to protect ATT’s limited 3G capacity. Given that there are millions of iPhone users registered with ATT, any app that Apple approves on the AppStore can affect AT&T’s business or put its 3G network to test. The most recent app to be banned from the App Store is the Google Voice.
Google Voice assigns a single phone number to (more…)

Apple App Store has inspired yet another, Vodafone is all set to launch a universal app market for smartphones. Vodafone joins a long list of AppStore followers viz. Blackberry, Acer, Windows Mobile, Orange, Samsung, Android, Nokia etc.
Vodafone would offer apps for all its devices (from different manufacturers) via a single platform and the customers would be charged for the same in their bill. Vodafone has a huge customer base to sell these apps, but what makes Appstore a real success is the seamless integration of the App Store along with quality applications that leverage the iPhone capabilities to the fullest.
Manufacturers and telecom operators have woken up to a all new method of making money from mobile devices. While Apple is celebrating 1 billion app downloads on its App Store, others are still preparing their launch. With the smartphone boom in full swing, it would be interesting to see how these platforms fare over the next few years. In case of carriers joining manufacturers with their own appstore, the consumer would be left with multiple options and sources to buy an app from. Consumer experience and usability would play a large role in the success of any of these upcoming app sales platforms.

Despite the success of the App Store, iPhone developers haven’t had the smoothest of journey in the past year. Developers have time and again protested against Apple’s appstore approval process. But what is frustrating some developers at the moment is the delayed payments from Apple. While Apple’s contract with the developers assures them payout in 45 days after the month end, some developers have claimed non payment since Sept / Nov 2008.
In recession time (otherwise aswell) we believe that cash rich companies like Apple should make extra attempts to pay their partners / developers timely. Apple recently celebrated successful sales of 1 billion Apps via the AppStore, but the people behind the development of these wonderful apps are hurt. The situation has gone so far for these developers that they are threating legal action against Apple for these delayed payments.
Me too I’m afraid. They owe me 1,000’s and some of us have families and houses to pay for
[iPhone Developers Forum]
Apple certainly has thousands of apps and developers to take care of and it would certainly make sense for them to improve the payout system to accommodate this traffic. Hope things go peacefully and we keep seeing some amazing apps on the iTunes AppStore.

Following Apple, Microsoft, Nokia, Android and UIM, Orange is the next to launch its application store. The application store will be called Orange Aplication Shop. Orange Application Shop will go live in France and UK in a few weeks.
For now the applications will be available only for four handsets viz Nokia N96, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, HTC Touch Diamond and Sony Ericsson W980. It will be availabe for other handsets by the end of 2009.
Around 300 applications will be availabe for now from publishers like AFP, Gameloft and PacketVideo. The publishers have the advantage of greater revenue with the Orange Application Shop. OAP is ready to offer greater percentage of revenue to publishers whose applications are more popular.
The applications would cost €6 on an average and €12 at max. The applications will be availabe for a trial before you buy the full versions. The smartphone boom as we call it (with the AppStore effect)!

Official app stores for smartphones are available in plenty now. After the success of the Apple App Store Android, Blackberry, Samsung, Nokia, Windows Mobile etc all have taken the same route. The mad rush is now crazy with almost a new announcement on similar lines every week.
But this one is a real surprise for us. PC maker Acer that recently joined the smartphone bandwagon with its Tempo series of windows mobiles is now considering its own app store for its smart phones.
Initial Tempo series smart phones from Acer are based on the WM 6.1 OS, however they have several Windows Mobile 6.5 based handsets due for launch before year end.
While Microsoft had announced its own app marketplace for Windows Mobile at MWC 09; Acer’s own marketplace would allow it to get a share of the sales…!

As reported earlier Nokia has launched its AppStore plans at MWC 09. Ovi store as it is branded is now accepting publishers requests. The store is expected to go live in May, though the first Nokia device to have an integrated Ovi Store would be the N97 (that would be in June).
The store would also be accessible by a browser and would support most S40 and S60 models already in the market. Expecting tonnes of existing apps to enter the Ovi Store, Nokia plans to have a intelligent system that understands your taste for Apps over time and suggest apps that you would prefer.
