Its 3 years since we saw the first glimpse of the Apple smartphone and over the past 2.5 yrs it has changed the face of the mobile industry. The iPhone in no time has managed to top the charts and become one of the biggest money churners for Apple. This is to such an extent that iPhone now makes more money for Apple than what Nokia the biggest manufacturer of cellphones in the world earns.
So its natural for us to compare any new smatphone with the iPhone and its a fact that many of them came up after the iPhone with a similar design. Is that a right approach? While I still believe that comparing phones of different form factors is not exactly the right thing to do, the fact remains that the innovation on the iPhone is not just about the form but lot more. The UI, multi touch support since inception, amazing web integration and the App Store to name a few. These things are independent of the form factor and I won’t be surprised if we shall see something which is not a full touchscreen (i.e. sans keyboard) like the iPhone succeed beyond the heights that Apple has touched in this market.
One thing that makes me love the Palm Pre is the amazing integration of a (more…)

Yes, Apple has a bad repute with breaking jailbreaks, bricking iPhone’s, trying to deem 3rd party apps as illegal, locking its devices and making everything from its earphones to charger pins proprietary. But they might not go after the Palm Pre, which syncs with the iTunes posing as an iPod.
Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.
While this recent note on Apple’s support site wrt 3rd party media players has sparked off rumors that Apple is miffed with the Palm Pre and is working to disable its syncing with iTunes in future versions; this might not be specifcally targeted to the Pre. Allowing the Pre to sync with iTunes doesn’t hurt Apple as much as jailbreaking the iPhone does. As engadget notes “Apple would have to actively code in a USB node check to actually block syncing”.
Palm has already stepped on Apple’s shoes with multitouch on the Pre, this was followed by strong words from Apple, but no legal exchange between Apple and Palm took place. Though Palm did issue a statement that they respect others patents. I get a feeling its just the rivalry between Palm and Apple (with the iPhone as well as former Apple employees working for Palm) that gives fuel to rumors that Apple wants to blockout the Pre from iTunes. Apple has better things to do, more revolutionary products to develop & larger interests to secure before it spends time killing competition by such tactics.

This is a big month for smartphones, arguably three of the decades biggest smartpones have launched in the past 1 week. The Palm Pre, Apple iPhone 3GS and the Nokia N97! Whle the Pre promises to revive Palm and put new life into the once very innovative handheld maker, Apple unveils its fastest iTouch device ever with a major OS update and Nokia looks to make that punch in the touchscreen segment with its N97.
So which one of these are you buying? Waiting for reviews comparing them? Well IMO, its stupid comparing these 3 devices amongst themselves. Each one of them appeal to a different user and has its own strong points and ready buyers. N97, Pre and the iPhone; all three have a different structure, different OS and a different market. Lets have a look at each of them individually:
