Smartphone wars: Apple sues HTC over patents

March 2nd, 2010

Apple isn’t content with just counter-suing Nokia over patents, Cupertino has actually gone ahead and filed a suit against HTC for infringing 20 of its patents. While nothing is very clear as of now and just as the Nokia vs Apple battle seems long drawn with ITC and multiple suits coming in picture, we can expect similar action between Apple and HTC in coming weeks / months.

All Apple discloses officially is that the patent infringement is related to the “iPhone’s user interface, underlying architecture and hardware.” Here is the official release: (more…)

Apple predictions on Bloomberg UTV by our very own Annkur

January 28th, 2010

With so much hype and hoopla around the Apple press event and their to be launched products in 2010 (read Apple’s very own tablet and the 4th generation iPhone). Our own Annkur was invited with his crystal bowl by Bloomberg UTV to help with the predictions and clear the air about the future on Apple. Predict he did on the 4th gen iPhones; but I guess we have to wait a little while to see if they come true.

In the meantime, while Annkur is waiting with his fingers crossed, you can go ahead and watch him making those revolutionary predictions (Jump post 1:00).

The Apple iPad, nothing magical?

January 27th, 2010

Steve Jobs just unveiled the iPad on stage and much as expected its runs the iPhons OS 4.0 (guessing) and the design of the tablet though is to my surprise just a oversized iPhone itself. While I hear people going WOW about this, frankly there is nothing really magical about the Apple tablet. No groundbreaking hardware and something like the Lenovo Hybrid was better innovation IMO.

And the problem of carrying a tablet shaped device and typing on it on the go still remains. A 5″ iPhone (or a 4.3″ atleast) would have pleased me much more. Though we are still hearing more from Steve’s keynote, lets see

Apple unveiling its latest creation on Jan 27th

January 19th, 2010

Feels good to have some confirmation on an Apple rumor that promises something revolutionary. No its not the Apple tablet going official but atleast the Apple event for January 27th which is expected to be the launch platform the iSlate and possibly reveal a new iPhone / iPhoneOS. While I still remain confused on what the iSlate would offer, we have some idea of what the iPhone OS 4.0 can show up.

Firstly it is expected that the iPhone OS 4.0 would run on the tablet aswell as the iPhone / iTouch. Amongst the new features multitasking is something we have waited for long enough and its time for the iPhone to adopt it. However we might also see Apple’s own Maps application that is rumored to be in works and will eventually replace the Google Maps native app on the touch and the iPhone. But for now all excitement waiting for the iSlate… i.e. if its coming :P

(Apple is marketing the event as “come see our latest creation” which certainly points at a NEW product!)

AppStore piracy is almost $0.5 billion market!

January 14th, 2010

Apple has proudly sold 3 billion apps on the iPhone platform. But the pirated apps market is booming and estimations suggest that it has dented Apple’s revenues considerably. Had the pirated apps been purchased legally by Apple; app developers would have got an additional $450 million in revenues. For Apple alone ,considering that they charge 30% of app revenue as commission the amount of loss comes close to $140 million.

While some smart developers like Ben did fight pirated apps in a very innovative manner, Apple has largely remained silent about the issue. Though even Apple has tried its best to get Jailbreaking labeled as illegal. Hackers in any platform would also prevail, its just that Apple has to ensure that these Hackers do not take  too much away from the developers by means of piracy. App Store being a key iPhone USP the issue is delicate for sure. (more…)

Your move, Nintendo!

September 24th, 2009

The console wars are all set to enter a new phase. Consider the evidence: Microsoft has revealed the Xbox 360 Elite and is readying a much more radical device for late 2010, complete with the player-as-a-controller Project Natal. Sony has come out with a slimmer PS3 and is looking to come out with UMD-less PSP Go in a month or two, even while working on bringing out a motion-sensing edition of the PS3 a bit later (yep, with the PS3 wand).

There is a name missing out there, right? Well, yes, it is that of the company that is actually been leading both Microsoft and Sony by the nose in the console business over the last year and a half – Nintendo. The Wii made fair mincemeat of the PS3 and Xbox 360, while the Nintendo DS has pretty much buried the Sony PSP.

But will that state of affairs continue? Both Sony and Microsoft are working hard to neutralise the Wii’s motion-sensing edge and the (more…)

Google Chrome available for Mac, but…

June 7th, 2009

googlechrome

Mac users have been waiting for a Mac version of Google Chrome for a long time now. Finally a Mac version of Chrome is now available for download. However Google does not recommend downloading the Mac version of Chrome to general public.

Chrome for Mac is in its early development stage and not yet ready for general users. Thiis Mac version of Chrome is uncomplete and is recommended for developers only.

Still, if you wish to give it a try, the installation is simple and the looks of Chrome resembles that of Safari 4 to keep the Apple feel on your Mac OS. Some aspects of chrome are faster than the Safari or Firefox. But, the Flash based pages like YouTube do not work and you cannot edit the settings easily.

The new iPhone would sport a magnetometer

May 10th, 2009

iphone-magnetometer

Magnetometer or a compass is already a feature on the T-mobiles’s G1. The BGR’s debug of the Apple 3.0 suggest that the iPhone would too sport a magnetometer. The magnetometer requires special hardware support. So, i guess it would be availabe only on the new iPhone (3rd gen).

The Magnetometer would support many other interesting feature besides a needle pointing towards the North pole. The magnetometer, coupled with your GPS chip and the camera, would give you detailed information about where you are and which direction you need to go along with the names and descriptions of the Buildings you see around you. Sounds like lot of work.

iTunes to launch with new pricing from April 7

March 27th, 2009

itunes

iTunes is bringing in a change in the pricing strategy from Apr 7. Originally it was suppossed to launch on Apr 1. But apple knwos that you have lots of friends who are going to fool you on the ‘Fools Day’. So they just decided that they’ll do it some other day.

The new pricing strategy says that the popular songs would cost $1.29 and the not so popular songs would cost 69 cents, everything else lieing in between. The popular songs would mostly include the classics, chartbusters and new songs from popular artist. The not-so-popular category includes new artists and ols flops or not-so-populars as they call it.

Users still would have a better option through amazone where any song would cost $0.99. So, when people start downloading a song apparently it would become popular and its price would go up. Now that it costs $1.29, less people would download it and the song again becomes less popular. I hope it works that way. I’ll just have to wait for the song to become less popular and then buy it.

And for all those whose friends always make fun of for having a bad choice when it come to music, start feeling lucky.

‘$1.29 per popular song’ – no wonder the piracy industry earns millions even in recession.

colourful_shuffle

Computer Choppers are offering you something that apple would have planned to offer a 3-6 months from now. The new iPod Shuffle is now available in your favorite colour thanks to the plating and colour anodizing done by the computer choppers.

While regular colours shown in the picture would cost you 50$ premium over your iPod cost, some special colours like copper, rose gold and platinum may cost you somewhere around 200$.

And for a few of those who like their gizmo to be a status symbol, you can even have a few diamonds embossed on your iPod.

Apple pushed multi-touch out of Android?

February 11th, 2009

millionaire-google-apple

The G1 / Android created much hype before going public a few months back. But it was anything buy an iPhone killer. A good phone with good features and nice web integration. Powered by Google and a very capable hardware manufactuere HTC the G1 certainly could have done better. And here comes an explanation to why a mojor feature such as multitouch on G1 was left out by Google.

Apple holds patent relating to multitouch, though disputed on how that exactly that applies and how any of its competitors have infringed upon Apple’s patent(s); an insider reveals that Google complied to Apple’s advice and disabled the multitouch support on Android despite both the hardware and software platform being capable of supporting multitouch. Also revealed is that a standard 3.5mm headphone jack was also left out of the G1 just to please Apple.

While Google and Apple are known to be friends with a common rival (yes the BIG M); Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt is also on Apple’s Board. Thus the report suggests that Google avoided souring its ties with Apple by challenging its patents as openly as Palm did with the PRE.

While this remains to be a rumor, knowing that Google is known to respond to any such public news we can expect to hear from them on this soon!

An Android hack demonstrating its multitouch capabilities downstairs on video.
