A common trouble with most iPod / iPhone users is the problem syncing their data with multiple systems. iTunes is nasty, and you can easily end up loosing all your data. Here I a useful video with instructions on getting rid of this problem!

Apple has been rated amongst the 10 most overrated brands by Lucas Conley. And the reason is something that we all know. They sell you great HYPE! May it be the iPhone, iPod or the MacBook Air. Others amongs the list are MTV and Victoria’s Secret. (But frankly we know its Great products + Great Hype that works for Apple)!
Apple has made an art of packaging existing technologies. But in an age when no-name companies make phones of equal quality at a fraction of the price of an iPhone, how long can Apple keep sales and its cool factor up? Only as long as it can sustain the hype. And with the Google phone on the horizon, it’s going to take a lot of hype.

The New MacBook Pro
The recently announced Macbook and Macbook Pro updates have made its way to India within days of its US launch. Also coming this November is the Apple 24″ Cinema Display!
The new Macbook and Macbook Pro are way ahead of their time and competition. Notable enhancements include an aluminium unibody, slimmer / sleeker and lighter design, enlarged glass trackpad with new touch features, and LED-backlit display.
Aluminum Precision unibody enclosure: The most stunning factor of the new MacBook’s is the body design. To eliminate unwanted parts and complexities the base of the new MB and MBP are carved out from a single block of aluminum (Video and more here). Thus resulting in thinner, more durable and incredibly beautiful designs.

Imagine your cellphone communicating with your environment, It turns silent as soon as you enter a meeting room, it adjusts the display contrast as soon as you leave home, it sets your caller tune to notify the caller when you are riding the bike and switches the music playlist as per your jogging speed? Weird? Well probably not!
Looking at the recent patent filing by Apple, this might well be the future. Everything that your used on a day to day basis shall communicate with your gadgets via RF. And thus your future iPod, Macbook and whatever portable device Apple makes would behave more than just personal.

When Google announced the open source Android, they kicked off a
developers challenge to create apps for the Android platform. And they promised a whooping $10 million to be distributed for the best apps. So why does Google care so much for the apps? Why such a big amount? Its not that 10mln is too big for Google, but it is a significant amount.
My questions were answered by Apple’s Appstore for the iPhone! Apple recently launched the iPhone v2.0 with Appstore enabling 3rd party apps. And accorging to a WSJ report, Apple has already sold apps worth $30 million in the first month. If this trend continues, Apple takes home atleast $360 in revenues (offcourse a good part of that will go to the developers). But still, with the impending release of iPhone in many other countries, the figure will only rise.
iPhone is a close platform. Everything that comes in goes through a firm check, and anything that displeases Apple, won’t make it there. Still we see such good figures. This only makes me wonder, what is the real potential of Android?

Airtel has announced the official date for iPhone 3G launch in India as 22nd August. Though we hear that Vodafone would launch the same a week earlier, what would be interesting is the pricing! We heard about
Airtel’s plans for iPhone in India way back in June, but the actual pricing is till undisclosed by both Airtel and Vodafone.
Apparently the activation process was tricky for Airtel due to some conflicts with TRAI regulations (rumored!), They seem to have finally cracked the issue. iPhone in India would run on EDGE untill 3G is rolled out next year.

Yes we are late to write on this, but we sure have some story to tell. iPhone will surely go down in the history books as one of the most hyped gadgets. And when its such a substance with good hype things do get spicy! Here is the showdown of the Apple iPhone 3G launch:
- Almost all iPhone service providers around the world are expecting record sales.
- Apple and Rogers faced downtime: Rogers brings the iPhone to Canada and the mad demand for the iPhone crashed their systems, resulting in a outage. Not surprising? Well then the Apple iTunes Registering system failure left millions of iPhones BRICKED. Many new buyers for the iPhone were sent back with unactivated device as the system was down. Adding to the traffic was the iPhone 1st gen customers upgrading to the iPhone Firmware V2.0.
- The transition form .mac to MobileMe the new seamless data integration service from Apple was delayed. And went online late.
- Many AT&T stores and later the Apple Stores then turned back customers apparently due to stock issues. Though TechCrunch suspected that the iPhone shortage might have been fake, here is the complete picture at iPhoneHelp.
- Not too concerning but some reports of defective LCD (like last time)
- Bad news for Apple that the iPhone 3G reviews have given a THUMBS DOWN to the BATTERY life. read the review
- The AppStore is live and is a Super Hit as expected! More on the AppStore here
- So here we are awaiting the second wave of iPhone 3G launch across the globe, Stay tuned!

With the launch of
iPhone SDK and the subsequent release of iPhone Firmware Version 2.0, 3rd party applications now become official for the iPhone. The online Apple Online Applications Store for the iPhone is live with 500+ softwares (and games) out of which many are totally FREE.
Tonnes of applications were seen on Jailbroken iPhones earlier. But most of them were buggy and out test handset at
iPhone Help had to be restored almost once a week. Now powered by the official SDK (Software Dev Kit) companies like Sega has some supergames for the iPhone. The ones who have previewed it confirm that the graphics of these games are excellent! Also Applications would change the way you use your mobile.
MLB.com presented an application showing latest scores, real-time video highlights of almost all games. eBay also has its own app for the iPhone now!
MobileMe subscription provides seamless integration of all your data between your PC/Mac and the iPhone. Also not to forget Photo geotagging, iWork supports Ms Office (Word, Excel & Powerpoint), Contacts search and more. With plenty more to come, we would try and get you the latest on iPhoneHelp.in

A common example that my friend Sharukh gives about his Mac is the superior virus protection. He boldly claims that while most people around him are worried about viruses and other malware on their systems, he is immune. While there aren’t many Mac users around here in India, but there sure is merit in this claim. So why is it so that Mac users feel so secure? Is Windows really that bad?
|
|
Firstly lets acknowledge the fact (no I don’t love numbers, but they always show up): Windows still has a 91%+ market share in the OS market vs the Mac’s 7.x% (source). What I want to highlight here is, with a 91% market share Windows has been the prime target for all malware’s. Its just a side effect of popularity (Disclaimer: I am no Windows fan). Security loop holes in WinOS gets a lot of air and bad publicity due to the operating system’s popularity, but then since the number of people working on/using Windows is many times more than the MacOS there are good enough chances that security flaws will get discovered early.
Its not that Mac hasn’t seen any malware yet. Just we hard of some new ones. But again two facts 1) Malware aimed at Mac won’t affect the masses, so there isn’t too much effort to make any for them. 2) Many of those Windows aimed viruses are ineffective on the Mac. So whenever I transfer a file from my friends Mac on to my PC, I have the antivirus buzzing really loud lol. |
I was lucky to discuss this topic of OS security with Jon Hall during the IIT TechFest, and I what he said quality of the OS doesn’t lie in how secure it is, its about how soon can they patch a exploit that has been discovered. Apple systems including the iPhone are gaining more and more popularity each day. And probably the time has come that it faces the challenges that Microsoft has been facing since ages. So As the MacOS now gains better market share and fan following, I would be interested to see how well they tackle these issues. Afterall no system, and I repeat: NO SYSTEM IN THIS WORLD IS 100% SECURE - neither mine, nor yours!

Writing on this topic also makes me feel “Why people make viruses and other destructive malwares?” - Though I wont go into detail on it a quick google search gets some results. See here
