14.6MP cellphone camera coming in Q2 2010

January 5th, 2010

OmniVision – the company that supplies the cameras for your iPhone 3G and 3GS and Blackberry Storm / Curve has unveiled its new OV14825 14.6 megapixel image sensor specially built for mobiles. This thing will empower the future smartphones to shoot 1080p videos at 60 fps, now thats some quality. For comparison sake the 3GS does 30fps VGA recording and is already the most popular video camera for YouTube uploads.

Using a 1.4-micron OmniBSI pixel architecture the 1/2.33-inch sensor is capable of performing well in low light conditions and at the same time consumes lesser battery battery power keeping in mind the mobile usage.

So is this what Steve Jobs is planning for the iPhone 5th generation?

With memory size of 4GB /8GB and priced between ¥12,450.00 (USD 137) and ¥19,890.00 (USD 219) , this works fine for localized pranksters, gizmo freaks aswell as some professionals ;)

Rumor roundup: Apple iPods with camera

September 8th, 2009

It’s a very strange feeling for me to say now that within days hours we’ll be able to (in all probability) drool over the new iPods from Apple, and that too with cameras! We have had continuous rumors and live pictures (leaked) over the past few weeks of the upcoming iPod nano and iPod touch sporting a camera. While I had early on discarded these rumors, the persistence of the rumors has now forced me to reconsider the camera iPods (or maybe I have been right all along and the camera iPods will do a no-show tomorrow).

Pictures of leaked accessories from unheard manufacturers in China and around Asia have been common for unreleased Apple products. We have also seen these turn out to be nothing more than publicity stunts for these manufacturing cos (remember the iPhone Nano rumors?). The same can be applied to the iPod nano and iPod touch. The rumors started with silicon / plastic cases sporting a camera field and microphone slot, and we at OnlyGizmos took every bit of the gossip with several pinches of salt. The early rumors were followed by  more leaked cases (live pictures and digital ones) and (more…)

Kite Aerial Photography concept gives you a bird’s eye view

April 27th, 2009

kite_n_camera

What if you were a kite and could fly high in the air? How would the world look from up there? All of us might have imagined this when we were a kid.

Well, here is a concept that could give you a similar experience. No, it wont take you high in the air. But it would take your camera with the kite. Your camera records the bird eye video while you enjoy flying that kite. The concept has been designed by Mikeasaurus and the step-by-step design is given at instructables.com.

Be sure not to indulge into any kite fight while you are testing this concept. You don’t want to loose your camera in a kite fight.

Rumor: iPhone 3.0 with 3.2 mega-pixel camera, next 5MP

April 4th, 2009

iphone_camera

The next-gen iPhone is to feature a 3.2 mega-pixel camera according to rumors in the Asian markets. The rumor is that OmniVision has won a contract to supply 3.2 mega-pixel CMOS image sensor.  OmniVision beats Apple’s current supplier Aptina, has also secured orders for 5 mega-pixel CMOS image sensor for another product which is to be released later this year.

An upgrade in iPhone’s camera (currently 2 mega-pixel) is more than obvious. We would be hoping for a Flash aswell in the upcoming iPhones. The next-gen iPhone 3.0 is expected to launch in June ‘09.  Not much is known about the 5 mega-pixel product, could be the next iteration of iPhone. Don’t worry, we’ll keep digging and keep you updated.

Camera Phones: Will they replace your DigiCams and Camcorders?

June 30th, 2008

Mobile phone or digital camera?
Camera Phones have made it big in the cellphone market in the past 2 years. Such that they outsell the number of Digital Cameras sold in the last few year. While a decent 2 Megapixel camera phone is common, the 3MP’s and 5MP’s have made a bold entry aswell (not to forget the upcoming Sony Ericsson 8.1MP).

Now lets get a little more deep in these figures that we read above (I really hate these numbers but need to mention them here). How many of those camera phones that outsold DigiCams were of 2MP or above? The fact remains that most mobiles sold today are the low-end ones which offer a basic VGA cam (some with 1.3MP or a simple 2MP). No I don’t mean to say that good camera phones won’t (or haven’t) outsell the proper Digital Cameras or Camcorders, but the food for thought lies in “Have these camera phones taken away the Digital Camera market by attracting the Real DigiCam users? By making them sell their DigiCams and go for a good camera phone?“.

The fact that I have noticed is, 8-10 people around me haven’t even turned on their mobile camera in the last 7 days. Though I don’t have any official figures, I would love to conduct a survey to see how and how much do people use their cellphone cameras. But what disappoints me is the competition put up by the DigiCam makers. Today a 5MP Digital Camera is available for $100 (Rs 4000) in India, but this came at a serious compromise of quality.

(An old 2005 study) “according to a study recently released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), which found that some 91 percent of digital camera owners consider their digital camera to be their main photography device.” – read

Though I don’t know how many of you reading this are serious about photography but anyone who has used a decent Digital Camera with a Optical Zoom would agree with me. Till recent I used to have a really Old Sony T-3 (5MP with 3x Optical Zoom) and none of the camera phones still impress me for 1 basic reason: There is no OPTICAL ZOOM offered! Another misconception is ‘higher MegaPixel = Better Camera’. But as Mr Mahaveer (of SAPL) always mentions to me, “The quality of the image depends on the lens, not the Megapixel”. This is probably why  My good old Treo 650 with a old VGA camera beats all the 1.3MP phones in the market in terms of quality.

If these popular camera phones are to really capture the REAL Digital Camera market then manufacturers would need to really UP the competition. Xenon flash and high resolution is the first step, but the sugar coat would really be the Optical Zoom.

The Goooogle camera !!

May 12th, 2007

Not content just tracking you when you’re surfing the web, Google announced plans today to count eyeballs in physical spaces. Big G is partnering with a company called Xuuk to distribute the EyeBox, a palm-sized camera that can record how many times viewers look at billboards or products in brick-and-mortar stores.
The $1000 camera isn’t the world’s most high-tech gadget — it simply shines a beam of IR light and counts how many times it sees redeye in the ensuing images, indicating that the subject was looking right at the camera — but it’s a big upgrade over previous systems, which cost over $25,000 and required subjects to remain perfectly still.

Xuuk says the EyeBox works up to 32 feet away and doesn’t require any sort of calibration, and that it collects no data other than how many times people have looked at a particular object.

The simplicity of the system, however, means that each billboard or product requires its own separate Eyebox for tracking. While we’re not sure advertisers are going crazy to drop a cool grand per billboard, we’re certainly not going to underestimate their love of counting eyeballs, or Google’s ability to turn viewing statistics into cold, hard cash. We’re also curious to hear if the camera can see through sunglasses — cause we’re about to start wearing ours 24/7.

OK here is the update, its is one of the rare occasions when Engadget goofs up. Google has nothing to do with the camera and the product is a sole creation of Xuuk!
