Wondering what is the real cost of the chinese make iPhone clones like the oPhone that we saw recently? Well here is a estimated cost sheet of a fake iPhone. Cheap, cheaper and cheapest parts with no good software is what you get. According to this estimate a very basic iPhone clone shall cost $39.56 to manufacture.
Extremely popular in India these devices have given the Nokias and Sony Ericssons a run for their money. Prompting Nokia to do some dard-e-disco.
Some better clones in the market that have also accommodated the accelerometer and finger swipe gestures of the iPhone. These might cost a little more. But thats the reality of Chinese handsets for you – $39.56.

Indian govt has finally given a 31st March deadline to telecom operators to disconnect fake chinese devices without IMEI. The decision was taken long back and this time there is no extension to the deadline. With Polls coming up and concerns that terrorists might be using these unregistered devices the Indian govt wants to be absolutely sure.
Though I have my own doubts on how this would affect terrorists communication as a Nokia or Sony Ericsson is available at every other shop in town! And no one really maintains a log of who bought which IMEI. There is a good resale market on eBay aswell for used mobiles and any of these can be used by terrorists.
However this move would certainly cut competition for leading mobile manufactuers who face tough time matching up with the cheap Chinese devices.

Cheap unbranded Chinese handsets are a big hit in India. In a highly competitive mobile market with razor thin margins; most small retailers have either stopped or significantly reduced trading in branded handsets in favor of these Imported ones (also check ebay). These Chinese handset designers are clever and understand their target market very well; Firstly they work on the quantity principle instead of quality and secondly they are priced less than half the Nokia’s and SE’s! Also not to forget some of them copying popular Nokia designs/tunes and also offering WM logos on bootup.
