The rumors of Dell getting into smartphone production gets a official confirmation today with the much rumored Dell Mini 3i being officially announced in China. Not impressing me too much, the device lacks 3G and WiFi (probably due to the Chinese regulations) but has a 3.5″ touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity and a microSD card slot. Dell Mini 3i runs the Android based Open Mobile System and is launching on China Mobile’s network in China.
Mini 3i features a 3.2MP camera and pictures reveal a LED flash light and a micro USB port. No details on the pricing, release date or global launch yet.

NetEase, a Chinese tech blog, reports about an e-mail from China Mobile to the developers which brings in some additions to the rumors about a Dell Smartphone.
The e-mail has been sent to developers to develop app for Smartphones for China Mobile. The list of mobile phones includes a Dell OPhone as shown in the screenshot above. The Dell smartphone called the Mini 3i matches the Dells pattern of device names. And Dells deliberate efforts to enter the smartphone market have been in rumors for quite a time now. The odd thing here is the introduction of the Dell smartphone in the GSM network and not the TD 3G standard. Why would Dell want to miss out the highest network standard on their first smartphone?
The rumor has it that the Dell’s smartphone would be launched by China Mobile in a week or so, along with some other smartphones. Hit the jump for a picture of what seems to be the rumored Dell smartphone we are talking about.

Its being rumored since ages that Dell is working on a smartphone and that too quite secretively
. In fact the PC giant was expected to out the device at MWC earlier this year but they did a no show there. However after all the speculations getting cold and forgotten here is something that gives a fire-shot to these rumors. A leaked image of a Dell smartphone is here to help our hopes. Cant be certain if its true, but the design looks more like Nokia 5800 to me (though people are comparing it to the Palm Pre).

Btw: It is already confirmed that Dell is testing the Android platform on Netbooks. Earlier this year Acer made a jump to the smartphone market with its Windows Mobile powered Tempo series. Acer is also expected to release an Android based smartphone and Netbook by year end.

The latest quarterly numbers revealed that Acer is up for grabbing the #2 position in terms of market share of PCs. Last quarter Acer’s sales grew three folds (compared to same quarter last year) bringing its total market share to 13%, just 0.1% short to the market share of Dell in the PC world.
The leader in terms of sales in the PC market is HP with a 19.8% shares. Dell’s total shipment of PCs fell by 17%. Acer seems to be compromising its profits for market share, the same strategy being followed by Dell about a decade back. Currently Dell is penetrating into emerging economies with India being its biggest revenue generator outside US.
Earlier this year Acer taped the smartphones market with its Windows Mobile offerings, Dell is expected to follow shortly. PC makers are trying hard to keep up their numbers in recession time. Would be interesting to see how the market shapes up over the next few months.
