And the Infibeam Pi ebook reader is real!

January 27th, 2010

Whoa, we got this one right for sure! Just as we revealed to you all exclusively that Infibeam is all set to unveil the Indian Kindle, they have actually gone on sale with an e-book reader. Called the “Pi” this thing costs a reasonable Rs 9999 and is currently on pre-order @ Rs 999. Shipping starts from Feb 22nd.

Keeping in mind the multitasking that users in India like to do, this thing comes with a music playback option, however the hardware atleast from the looks of it doesn’t look to be as refined as the Amazon Kindle (nor did we expect that). The 6″ screen is E-ink, however the built does away with too many buttons. The local language support is present with Hindi and Sanskrit mentioned (expect all major languages though). Formats supported includes PDF, EPUB, HTML, TXT, MOBI, DOC and Images (will show in grayscale – screen is 600×800 pixels) in JPG, BMP & PNG. The Pi also packs in some gaming support with a Function Key made available & Navigation key that is used for Soduku. We are pleased to see a accelerometer offered in the mix.

So it this a good enough formula for India? Yes IMO. I don’t see anyone buying a $250 or $500 Kindle in India, but throw in a MP3 player and some basic gaming along with local language, well we might well have a success story here. The need only tech concept rules India big time. We don’t want polished hardware, colourscreens with multi-touch. We want cheap, we want multi usable products. Thats what the Pi is. I would surely give this a thumbs up with over 1 lac books on sale with Infibeam. What now I hope is that Infibeam does to books, what moserbaer did to movies!.

Infibeam working on an Indian version of Kindle, named Pi?

January 22nd, 2010

We are hearing from a pretty reliable source that Infibeam (yes the shopping portal) is cooking up its ebook reader and has already got “killer” tieups with some publications. Currently no ebook reader has really launched in India and local publishers are still battling to get the hang of the social media wave and digital marketing. In such a scenario the possibility of an Indian Kindle is like the Apple tablet for local publishers.

The source goes on to say that the Infibeam reader would support local languages and in all probability will be called the ‘Pi’. No details on the hardware, pricing or launch but this one is said to be “thinner” than the Amazon Kindle (not sure if he was referring to the original Kindle or the Kindle 2 with the thinner remark). We also now note a ebook section on Infibeam that lists a ‘Reading Device’ with a ‘Pie’ symbol that adds some more fuel to the rumor.

Kindle app on iPhone 3G attracts lawsuit!

March 25th, 2009

Apple is certainly now new to lawsuites, however this one is certainly very interesting. Apple has now been sued for promoting the iPhone as a ebook reader. Apparently the concept of a touchscreen ebook reader has been patented over 7 yers ago by Switzerland-based MONEC Holding Ltd.

A self-described “leading innovator for mobile, globally usable communication solutions,” MONEC claims to be in the business of “developing and marketing equipment for the transmission of data to mobile electronics communication systems, managing and utilizing patents in this area and awarding licenses.” [Source]

While the lawsuit doesnt make any direct reference, it is certain that Amazon’s free Kindle App has resulted this (Kindle is not the first ebook reader for the iPhone though). We really believe that such claims are unreasonable and goes against the smartphone culture that is fast picking up globally. Handhelds are going to be multipurpose and softwares would explore unseen capabilities of these samartphones. A ebook reader on the iPhone certainly brings the service to the masses and thats what matters the most!

Kindle 2 now official; Faster, slimmer, lighter

kindle2

As expected Amazon Kindle 2 has been officially announced. The pricing is the same as rumored i.e. $359 and the device is currently available on amazon for pre-order; ships 24th Feb onwards. Kindle 2 lacks Wi-Fi though and works on the Sprint network. A interesting debate is one whether Kindle would stand alone with most consumers preferring single mobile devices that can take care of all their portable needs.
