ContactFlow : Snapshot browsing contact application for iPhone

February 8th, 2010

ContactFlow may be new for App Store but was available previously for jailbreaked iPhones. The application allows iPhone users to browse through their contacts in a cover flow style. Its similar to browsing albums on an iPod.

While flipping through the contacts, the user needs to tap on a particular contact to flip the picture for calling options. The options involve calling, SMS and e-mail. The application is a standalone app and doesn’t integrate with the inbuilt contact application on iPhone. Which means, it would have to be used instead of using the built-in contact app.

The good thing is it would compel you to take photos of most of your contacts. I know its time consuming, but it would leave you with a lively contact book to browse through whenever you use your iPhone for calling/SMS/e-mail. The application is available on iTunes for $1.99. [iTunes Link]

Classics iPhone app inspires iBooks on the iPad (AppStore Free)

February 6th, 2010

Now for this app giving the name of Classics is very rhetorical, cause the future of books is This, as this the core thing on iPad. Let me clarify myself here, Someone once said future is very much reading a book from a screen and voilà here it is with Classics. An Ebook store with titles ranging from Alice in wonderland to Pride and Predudice, from Jungle Book to Gulliver’s Travels it’s got a great collection of eBooks. The text is eligible and the turning of pages with a touch of a finger gives it a very neat look, you (more…)

Droid’s publicity stunt via Apple’s AppStore failed

December 1st, 2009

idroidMotorola Droid, the closest competitor to the iPhone, tried to gain some publicity through the iPhone platform (Update: the author didn’t meant to imply that Motorola pushed this app via the developer). The handset, which is the first one to be powered by Android 2.0, introduced an application for the iPhone. The app obviously didn’t make it through the AppStore censors.

The iDroid application developed by Sawvv App did nothing but advertise the Motorola Droid through the AppStore. It showed the glowing red droid eye on the home screen. A click on the droid eye would show the different features of the Motorola Droid in bullet points. The features mostly included the ones that were the shortcomings of the iPhone, such as the slide-out QWERTY keypad, the ability to run multiple applications, and the (more…)

I tried to blow some candles, ended with a burnt iPhone :(

November 20th, 2009

I was naturally excited about the new Blower App for the iPhone. This thing uses the iPhone speaker to blow out air that as per the app description Blow out candles, Blow herbs away, Refresh your skin during hot summer nights! And seeing the youtube video demonstrating how the app works wasn’t enough for me. So I decided to put this thing to test myself. Here is the result.

Note: I tried this with my 2G iPhone. Will try to do this with a 3G if I get a volunteer :P – Video of this attempt is coming on YouTube shortly below (though the camera memory gave up on me, I have a few seconds to show).

0870: iPhone app that helps you save $

September 27th, 2009

0870

Enough of feature addons, games, utilities or fun apps that would only end up costing you a few $ or help you waste a few hours every week. But 0870 which had to wait a full 429 days for Apple’s approval is finally out to save UK users a few bucks. The app searches for alternative landline numbers for users dialing the premium numbers such as 0870, 0845 and 0800. A simple process, but helps save UK users against paying 35p per minute for dialing those premium nos.

According to the developer the app has saved its users £84,000 since its original release for the Android platform in Jan. The app is free (iTunes link) for the moment as is ad-supported. Expect this to be ported to other platforms soon :)

Bluetooth file transfer app comes to the iPhone via App Store

August 19th, 2009

bluetooth-p2p

A free App Store app brings to you one of the most wanted features on the iPhone / iPod touch. ‘Bluetooth Photo Share’ lets you transfer images between any two iPhone’s or iPod touch (2nd generation) using bluetooth. Currently all data sharing apps on the AppStore that lets you transfer a file between two iTouch’s requires WiFi or 3G connection, however this FREE app does the trick using Bluetooth.

The iPhone OS 3.0 allowed usage of Bluetooth for multi-player gaming, but file transfer was never discussed. One of the major downers for the iPhone in all our reviews has been the lack of Bluetooth file transfer and USB mass storage mode. Though this app does not allow you to transfer audio files or other documents, its a good feature to have at least for image sharing. If only now Apple lets it talk to other smartphones, or probably we are wishing for a little too much :)

Update: Just to clarify, we have heard of iBluetooth for Jailbroken iPhones. But the app never got the updates to accommodate many features that the developer had promised. Doubt if anyone enjoys that and nevertheless Bluetooth Photo Share is official!

FCC investigating Google Voice App Store ban, lesson for TRAI and DOT?

August 1st, 2009

Apple and AT&T have been really nasty with apps that competes / tests either of the two companies own services. Even the  VOIP applications on the App Store like Skype cannot use the AT&T’s 3G network to make calls. Such a policy has been put in place to protect ATT’s limited 3G capacity. Given that there are millions of iPhone users registered with ATT, any app that Apple approves on the AppStore can affect AT&T’s business or put its 3G network to test. The most recent app to be banned from the App Store is the Google Voice.

iPhone game developers accused of racism

May 4th, 2009

pocket_god

The 99 cent iPhone game Pocket God is believed to be racist by the Pacific Women’s Information Network. The group believes that the games lets iPhone users to torture and kill Pacific Islanders.

“How do you think people would react if you created a game where you were God and you could create and kill as many Mexicans as you wanted? Or Asians?” said Elaine Howard, one of the group’s members, “People would be outraged. I hope you don’t decide to advertise your application in New Zealand or Australia because you will get a backlash of the same intensity.”

The no. 5 ranked application on the Apple’s most paid app’s developers, Bolt Creative, issued an apology saying “Bolt Creative does not intend and has never intended to offend or marginalize any nationality, race, or culture in any of its video games, including Pocket God,”

Now, when these application builders have multiple races working for the development of an application and target multiple races as their customers, would they really intend to target a race with their application? Let us know in the comments.
