The wait for iPhone 3GSs official unveiling in India has been way too long and event the most die hard Apple fans that I know have given up and purchased a 3GS from the grey market already. However we now hear (or rather our friends over at Fonearena
) that the iPhone 3GS would be launched by Apple in India tomorrow i.e. 15th March 2010 with 4 operators. To my surprise Airtel has been dropped off according to this rumor. Last year we had seen Vodafone actually pushed iPhone aside and promoted Blackberry, but then given the market size you never know if Airtel dumped iPhone or its Apple taking the call! This time around Vodafone, Reliance, Aircel and Bharti would carry the phone officially in India (remember its still a rumor).
The issue now isn’t what price Apple would launch the iPhone 3GS for or if Bharti would offer 3G plans for the same or not – the iPhone 4G expected in June motivates people to wait a little more (you can’t blame them for their patience, Apple!). Just yesterday (before I heard this rumor) I happened to discuss with a friend about the iPhone 4G and he immediately shelved his 3GS plans
. Does Apple really expect to sell 3GS in India with the iPhone 4th generation expected to be out (atleast in US) by June end?
Thx Varun

Its known that the iPhone exclusivity with AT&T is going to end sometime in 2010. While AT&T hasn’t been able to renew its contract with Apple, it seems that rumors of Verizon’s Apple tablet love is coming true. Come Wednesday Apple invites the world to join them for for the unveiling of their “Latest Creation”. Without a doubt it can be said that the much hyped tablet would finally show its real face.
Given the strong chance that future iPhone’s would also find a new network (or multiple?) it is now speculated that Apple would announce the end of exclusivity with AT&T here itself. This also makes business sense with Android and WebOS grabbing all the other networks; Apple sure needs to communicate early to iPhone fans that the Jesus phone is getting more compatible in 2010.
Going CDMA should bring a whole new customer base to Apple and hopefully Reliance or Tata Indicom would take the opportunity to bring the iPhone 4G to India a little early
. Amongst other things I am expecting an iPhone OS update ‘4.0′ at the 27th Jan Apple event. We would be discussing the Apple event live on iPhone Help.

Airtel has announced the official date for iPhone 3G launch in India as 22nd August. Though we hear that Vodafone would launch the same a week earlier, what would be interesting is the pricing! We heard about
Airtel’s plans for iPhone in India way back in June, but the actual pricing is till undisclosed by both Airtel and Vodafone.
Apparently the activation process was tricky for Airtel due to some conflicts with TRAI regulations (rumored!), They seem to have finally cracked the issue. iPhone in India would run on EDGE untill 3G is rolled out next year.

Our source is pretty sure, but we would still count this as a rumor. But as it seems Airtel is preparing to release the iPhone 3G in India for as low as Rs 12500. The sourcing price for the same is said to be around Rs 10,000 + a $250 commitment to Apple over the next 2 years. Though we haven’t seen any subsidized locked phones in India yet, this might well be the beginning.
Both Airtel and Vodafone are gearing up for the iPhone 3G launch in India (which would actually run on EDGE here). And it is expected that only the old loyal customers would get the best deals under 20k, while new subscribers would have to shell out a little more.
We also heard of Vodafone preparing for as a Rs 17000 base price, but this one is unsure.

Although the 1st Gen iPhone never made it to Asia officially, we saw thousands of them coming in Unlocked and selling like Hot Cakes. But this might not be the case with New iPhone 3G which is due to launch in India and several other countries later this year.
The original iPhone were sold by Apple Stores (online and offline) without a AT&T contract activated. This allowed traders to purchase these devices from Apple and instead of going over to AT&T to activate a plan under the 2yr contract with them, the devices were exported out of the US. But this time around since the iPhone’s are significantly subsidized by Apple / AT&T (starting @ $199) a lot of care has been taken to avoid a similar situation.
The new Apple iPhone 3G wont sell online ++ you cannot buy it without activating a service plan from AT&T (even at the Apple stores). So we believe that this time iPhones wont make it to the Grey markets and fans would have to wait for the official launch by Vodafone and Airtel.
Since the supply of the original 1st Gen iPhone has stopped the Grey Market rates for the same has jumped by nearly Rs 9000 ($200) in India.
