Nokia has finally done something that makes us feel that they aren’t really heading towards the platform confusion mode as we have constantly been thinking. After juggling 3 different OS (Symbian, Maemo and oFono with Intel), Nokia has announced MeeGO which merges the Maemo project with a solo Intel project called Moblin (remember the Linux based OS?). Though this still leaves us wondering what would be the fate of oFono project that Intel and Nokia kicked off some time back.
While Maemo brings a PC capable platform, Moblin was aimed as the fastest booting OS by Intel. What would be the result of combining the two? Hope better than what they are doing individually! At the same time we also have a official promo video of the UI for Symbian 3 by Nokia, (similar to what has been seen earlier) bringing on-board multiple homepages, pinch to zoom etc. While we ain’t a 100% impressed, it seems that Nokia would finally get capacitive love. Learning from the success of the Corby series, Samsung is now introducing a new series fuelled with all sorts of social networks. The new Monte series already has Samsung Monte S5620, and now Samsung’s MWC flicker account has leaked two new handsets from the same series. These are the Monte Bar (GT-C3200) and the Monte Slider (GT-E2550) as shown in the pictures above.
For now, there are no specifications known of the duo. But with MWC just round the corner, we could soon have an official press release of the two. Samsung (in all probability) would also be releasing its Bada OS powered Samsung Wave during MWC (Mobile World Congress, Barcelona).

No, Samsung isn’t launching any social networking site for lovers. Wave is the new name they have given to their first Super AMOLED phone, which is widely speculated to be launched at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, in less then 24 hours from now.

Folks at Engadget came across a teaser on the Samsung Unpacked site that says “on Feb 14, a new mobile from Samsung is born. See it First in Barcelona”. There is a strong speculation that this new mobile may well be Samsung’s first smartphone with its own OS – the Bada OS (“bada” means “ocean” in Korean).
Technically, it’s called S8500 Wave. And one of the surprise features is its support of USB 3.0 (& bluetooth 3.0), which is yet to go mainstream. The Super AMOLED here refers to the 800 X 480 resolution and is claimed to (more…)

If the ‘internal’ sources of BeGeek are to be believed, the phone in the picture above is Nokia’s N98. The rumored specifications include a 4″ touchscreen, 32GB of internal storage and a slide-out QWERTY. The picture also suggests an OS looking similar to Symbian S60. As the design and model number would suggest to you, this is a N97 successor and we just hope that Nokia has had its learning’s from the N97. The phone also has a leaked price tag – €450 ($619). The phone is expected to be released during the holiday season of 2010 and rumored to be announced during the Mobile World Congress. But seeing Nokia’s low interest in the MWC 2010, we hardly see this happening.

A close look at the Nokia’s product lineup would surely suggest a broken link between the low-end phones and the high-end N-series/E-series. If the speculations of a handset called C5 are to be true, then Nokia might just be filling this broken link with a new C-series. C5 is the first leaked handset of the new rumored C-series. C5 would be a mid-range Nokia smartphone which should fit perfect into the price sensitive pockets. The phone seems to be running Symbian S60 v3 & the shortcuts / widgets on the homescreen reminds us of the 5233 UI we saw earlier this week.
The rumored specs are -
- Symbian S60v3 OS
- 3.2MP camera
- HSDPA / HSUPA
- 2.2? QVGA screen
- 50MB internal memory
- MicroSD Slot
- GPS / A-GPS
- 3.5MM audio jack
- FM Radio
The C5 is expected to be announced later this month @ MWC 2010 at Barcelona. The pricing of the device is unknown.

I have probably mentioned it a dozen times that Samsung is missing a smart OS in its touchscreen range (viz Corby, Star) and perhaps BADA OS would fill that gap. We are hearing that the S8200 would be the first BADA OS phone from Samsung and might well be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress later this month. The S8200 is said to be a Snapdragon powered high-end touchscreen, that would feature a 3.7″ AMOLED screen (), 5MP camera, WiFi, GPS, HSPA etc. Hope they also manage to get a more mature OS for the low end touchscreens aswell after the mega BADA OS launch is done with.
In other news it is also confirmed that Samsung GT-S8500 would be the first smartphone to support USB 3.0 & bluetooth 3.0 which has just been cleared by the Bluetooth SIG. Another full touchscreen with a 3.1″ OLED display the S8500 might well be one of the BADA OS releases at MWC. Exciting stuff happening from Samsung, hope they live up to the hype.

According to a MobileCrunch tipster (who is actually a developer) Microsoft is going pretty Apple-like with the upcoming Windows Mobile 7. Apart from the old rumors of the WM 7 making a official appearance at MWC next month we now hear that Microsoft has completely rewired the OS such that it has no backward compatibility (i.e. none of the old apps would run on new devices) and the new interface is ‘just as’ what we have seen with the Zune HD.
Apart from the Zune HD kernel powering the OS, WinM0 7 does away with background processes. Yes! Developers would now rely on iPhone style push notifications and not multitasking. Microsoft would define the standards for the hardware much more closely with the new OS and manufacturers would be allowed to build devices for the platform only if they adhere to these specifications (namely RAM, screen type/size, CPU). Customizations done by manufacturers (eg HTC’s Sense UI) would no longer by supported and the UI would be what Microsoft offers. Xbox Live for gaming + messaging and Zune integration is also expected. (more…)

No surprises, just as reported earlier this is a Dual SIM Android with 5MP camera and a 3″ touchscreen. But the phone has been demoed on video at the Mobile World Congress. What hurts the most is the absence of 3G.

Though Sony didn’t have much to offer in this years MWC, but this one phone overshadows all.

Sony announced the world’s first 12.1 mega pixel phone beating Samsung in the race of high definition camera phone. While Samsung is still working on its 12 megapixel camera, SE made sure that this one phone has it all – 3.5 inch touch screen, wi-fi, 3G, motion gaming, music, videos, 8GB memory and what not. And this mobile will be working on Symbian Foundation’s OS. so you can download and install lots of applications and games through Sony’s PlayNow online store and through other symbian application sources.

Notebook maker Acer introduced its new product line here at the Mobile World Congress 2009 – The Smartphones. Rumours were already there that Acer might introduce its smartphones in the MWC 2009. But no one thought that there would be not one or two but 8 smartphones. The company announced that they would be launching a total of 10 smartphones in 2009.
With recent rumors that Dell is expected to enter the smartphone market this announcement from Acer shouldnt be a very big surprise. Mobile market is exploding with growth faster than broadband and personal computers / notebooks. The Acer Tempo smartphone series would be powered by Windows Mobile. The picture shows one of the smartphones to be launched by Acer – The Acer M900.

Smartphone users will soon be able to participate in Web conferences using the hosted WebEx tool right from their phones. The new functionality allows smartphone users to participate in Web and audio conference calls right from their smartphones.
The great thing is that people won’t ever have to miss out on a meeting if they’re late to a meeting for some reason or stuck in the airport. They don’t have to fire up their laptop. They can participate right from their phone.
Cisco is making a version of its WebEx client software available to several smartphones. Like BlackBerry Bold, BlackBerry Curve and BlackBerry Storm, as well as the Nokia eSeries – E71, Nokia E75, Nokia N97, and other Nokia E series and N series devices, plus the Samsung Blackjack II.
“Cell phone users will no longer be second class citizens,” said Doug Dennerline, senior vice president and general manager of Cisco’s collaboration software group. “The great thing is that people won’t ever have to miss out on a meeting if they’re late to a meeting for some reason or stuck in the airport. They don’t have to fire up their laptop. They can participate right from their phone.”

Leading cellpohone manufactuers have joined hands to serve a common charging port i.e. MicroUSB in all their handsets. This would certainly be a big relief to consumers who have to really put up a fight for getting a charger while traveling (unless you are a Nokia users). Now would it be too much to ask Laptop makers to follow the same trend?
LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson made the announcement at MWC 09. And we are certainly excited

As reported earlier Nokia has launched its AppStore plans at MWC 09. Ovi store as it is branded is now accepting publishers requests. The store is expected to go live in May, though the first Nokia device to have an integrated Ovi Store would be the N97 (that would be in June).
The store would also be accessible by a browser and would support most S40 and S60 models already in the market. Expecting tonnes of existing apps to enter the Ovi Store, Nokia plans to have a intelligent system that understands your taste for Apps over time and suggest apps that you would prefer.

MWC 09 has some really exciting things for us. And one of the future technologies in use would be Solar Powered Samsung Blue-Earth. Blue Earth reduces the dependence on the conventional power adapter by utilizing the solar panel on the back effectively. This touchscreen is eco-friendly and has a 5 star energy efficient charger which uses standby power lower than 0.03W.
Blue Earth is made from recycled plastic called PCM, which is extracted from water bottles, helping to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions in the manufacturing process.
