Dell is cashing in on the hype around Google’s Chrome OS which promises to change the way we look at netbooks. While there is still time for the official version of Chrome OS (expected in 2H 2010), Dell has made available a compatible version for its Mini 10v netbook users.
The 10v compatible version is available for download here (instructions here). Though no virtual OS installation/support is available Chrome OS, you can load the 8GB image file on a USB to get this working. The users must be cautious though as this OS has gone through minimal testing and might bring in some issues. The WiFi connectivity is one of the features which can be troublesome.
While Acer decided to go with Android, Dell after playing with Ubuntu and Android is finally putting some weight behind the Chrome OS.

Nokia’s Booklet 3G did manage to excite us quite a bit until they revealed the pricing
. Today at the Nokia World 09, journalists from across the globe tested out the Nokia netbook. However, the bigger bomb that Nokia dropped was the pricing – approximately US$810, which translates to some Rs 40,000 in India. With the best of netbooks retailing for around Rs 20,000, I am sure that the Booklet 3G isn’t targeted at Nokia’s stronghold economies in Asia. Instead, it appeared that the product could possibly be set up to help the company to penetrate the US and UK markets.
It has been clarified that the Booklet 3G will be subsidized by carriers across the globe. But the fact that both carrier subsidy and 3G network will not be a reality in India anytime soon, us gizmo fans unfortunately will have to give this beautiful (and now expensive) gadget a miss, much against the original plan.
Apart from the pricing, the Nokia Booklet 3G does have an interesting set of (more…)

Just days after we digested the Nokia N900 that was considered to be its portable internet tablet, here comes Nokia’s official netbook entry. Rumors of a Nokia netbook were going around since long, but we didn’t expect it to come out with something full fledged so soon. Booklet 3G as they term it, this mini laptop looks a little more empowered than your regular netbook and has a 10.1″ display and Windows OS (rumored to be Windows 7). Nokia has just released a teaser (video below) for us to drool over without revealing specifications in particular. However the device looks good, full featured (yeah HDMI, GPS, 3G etc) and compact enough. Loads of Nokia customizations / integration can also be expected.

The most exciting part such as the pricing and availability isn’t revealed, it might well hit the streets sometime in October-December to encash the holiday season along with the Windows 7 official launch. This is one netbook that I would certainly consider, but only if it can match the pricing. Something below $500 would be great! (video downstairs)

A Nokia tablet like device headed for T-Mobile has been spotted at a filing with FCC. The device coded RX-51 might well be the Nokia Netbook that is was rumored some time back. The device in question is 3G enabled and has a large body. Either its another giant N97 type smartphone or the netbook / tablet!
It was also revealed a while back that Nokia has registered a C-series and X-series trademark. This might well be one of these devices since all Nokia phones appear at FCC in RM-XX format, while this one is RX-51.

Nvidia’s Tegra ARM chipset that was believed to be the smartphone revolutionizing processor will now find its way in Nvidia netbooks named ‘Firefly’. These Tegra powered notebooks are said to be powered by Windows CE and would certainly face immense competition from the already crowded netbook market.
Tegra is powering the Toshiba the TG01, Zune HD and a few Android powered devices, but its highly doubtful if it can power a good enough netbook. Specially with competitors like Acer opting for dual boot Netbooks that will support Android aswell as WinXP.

Netbooks have shown the power of recession and portability. Portability for its small size, recession for the price! Last quarter saw sales of 6 million netbooks, which amounts to 20% of total notebook sales in the same period.
Acer is the biggest player in the net-book market with over 30% market share. With the adoption of Android we can only expect that number to increase, both for Acer and the industry. Just beware of the side-effects

Android was the buzz last year for being the Google’s competitor to Windows Mobile and iPhone. And this year its already into the OS wars with HP, T-Mobile, Nokia and others planning netbooks powered by Android OS. So is Android developing into a full fledged Operating System? Is Google looking to compete with Microsoft head-on?
While the Android based mobiles haven’t done much damage to the WM / iPhone market share; they have set a strong alternative for manufacturers to adopt an open source mobileOS. With friendly terms and powerful backing of Google, the Android on handhelds will see a steady growth. And as predicted it might well surpass the iPhone by 2012, thanks to the number of manufacturers who have committed devices to this platform. But is Android really a ladder for Google to enter the OS market? IMO not really!
Android is a capable OS which can power PMP’s, Handhelds and Netbooks. Such that even a mobile maker like Nokia can consider entering the netbook market with Android. I really don’t see Google entering the OS market giving competition to Windows / Mac OS etc. Instead it would happily facilitate its online services like Gmail, Search, Calendar, Docs, Reader etc much easily to its audience. Google earns 95%+ revenues from online Advertising and the growth in the mobile Internet space prompts Google to enter this segment with something like Android.
Netbook users as the name suggests are heavy Internet users. Their main purpose of using a system is the Internet. Android OS on these portables would mean better than the best integration of Google’s services for Netbook users. Android is a cheap alternative for manufacturers and the very flexible one as well. If things go well with Android, pretty soon the 96% market share that Microsoft enjoys in netbooks would be under pressure.

As I decide to replace my notebook that has served me well for over 2 years now I was tempted to pick up a notebook from the eBay sale this week. A Lenovo S9 (120gig version) has enough horsepower for my purpose. All was well, price finalised with good discount and just as I started to make up my mind and the vendor left me in a doubt.
yes (price is good), but screen size is very small
…did you see the product?

Is Asus preparing Android based netbook? While netbook manufacturers around the world have been inspired by the Asus Eee; there still seems to be room for innovation. The price of an netbook will drop considerably if Android can be ported on to it. While Microsoft still offers WinXP to netbooks, it cannot match the FREE tag that Android carries!
While Apple remains out of the value segment, Google vs Microsoft is certainly getting hotter. Rumors of Android powered devices (other than Cellphones) has been out since long and we are certainly excited about it

Atlast we have some concrete picture of the super Netbook from Sony. The Vaio Pocket or Vaio P whtever it is called. The picture is taken from a display screen and not hands-on, but we are hoping for more soon! The FCC previously leaked the dimensions at 9.5 x 4.5-inches and the other specs might well be as seen in the image before. Also clearly visible is a webcam (Motion Eye) next to the display. This one is surely power packed.

Update:
So Sony has made the Vaio P official atlast. Amazingly small and loaded with features. And just one major side-effect – THE PRICE. Just as we suspected early on Sony can’t keep the $$ under control. This one costing $900!
