Is iPhone really the inspiration for nextgen smartphones?

January 11th, 2010

Its 3 years since we saw the first glimpse of the Apple smartphone and over the past 2.5 yrs it has changed the face of the mobile industry. The iPhone in no time has managed to top the charts and become one of the biggest money churners for Apple. This is to such an extent that iPhone now makes more money for Apple than what Nokia the biggest manufacturer of cellphones in the world earns.

So its natural for us to compare any new smatphone with the iPhone and its a fact that many of them came up after the iPhone with a similar design. Is that a right approach? While I still believe that comparing phones of different form factors is not exactly the right thing to do, the fact remains that the innovation on the iPhone is not just about the form but lot more. The UI, multi touch support since inception, amazing web integration and the App Store to name a few. These things are independent of the form factor and I won’t be surprised if we shall see something which is not a full touchscreen (i.e. sans keyboard) like the iPhone succeed beyond the heights that Apple has touched in this market.

One thing that makes me love the Palm Pre is the amazing integration of a (more…)

Palm tracking your location using the ‘Pre’

August 13th, 2009

Joey Hess has broken down the internal coding of the Pre webOS to find out some shocking information. It seems that Pre sends some information about you to Palm on a daily basis. Palm is not only tracking your installed applications and their usage, but also your location using your GPS chip.

“The first thing sent is intended to be my GPS location. It’s the same location I get if I open the map app on the Pre. Not very accurate in this case, but I’ve seen it be accurate enough to find my house before.” writes Joey in his blog.

Now we believe if not with the application usage, most of you might be worried about Palm tracking your GPS location on a daily basis. But do you know that you actually allowed Palm to do that to you? Yes, the Palm’s terms and conditions and privacy policy are broad enough to cover such information gathering by Palm. The terms and conditions not only allows Palm to access this information, but also allows Palm and its partners to use this information to offer you (more…)

Apple updates iTunes, Palm Pre Sync disabled

July 17th, 2009

palm-pre-itunes

Apple has updated iTunes to version 8.2.1 and fixed “important bugs”. Apple’s latest update of iTunes has blocked the Palm Pre sync. Which means the Palm users would no longer be able to download music from iTunes. A spokesperson from Apple has confirmed this, calling the iTunes-Palm Pre sync a ‘bug’ in the previous versions of iTunes.

“iTunes 8.2.1 is a free software update that provides a number of important bug fixes,” says Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris. “It also disables devices falsely pretending to be iPods, including the Palm Pre. As we’ve said before, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with unsupported digital media players.”

The two companies have been going through some issues over touch technology. The action would definitely cause some inconvenience to the Palm Pre users who (more…)

Palm App Catalog reached 100,000 downloads

June 29th, 2009

palm-app-catalog-1million

It has only been 18 days since the Palm Pre was introduced and the Palm App Catalog has crossed the one million download mark. With an estimated 150,000 Pre handsets sold in the market, each one of these handsets have managed to download an average of 7 applications. Every single application has been estimated to be downloaded about 33,800 times on an average. With just 30 applications available in the App Catalog to a single device (Palm Pre) and only to the number 3 carrier of US, the numbers look more than impressive. With still a lot of customers waiting in the Que for their Palm handsets, looks like the APP Catalog is all set to beat the records of Apple’s App Store.

Stop comparing Pre, N97 & the iPhone

June 13th, 2009

pick-your-poison

This is a big month for smartphones, arguably three of the decades biggest smartpones have launched in the past 1 week. The Palm Pre, Apple iPhone 3GS and the Nokia N97! Whle the Pre promises to revive Palm and put new life into the once very innovative handheld maker, Apple unveils its fastest iTouch device ever with a major OS update and Nokia looks to make that punch in the touchscreen segment with its N97.

So which one of these are you buying? Waiting for reviews comparing them? Well IMO, its stupid comparing these 3 devices amongst themselves. Each one of them appeal to a different user and has its own strong points and ready buyers. N97, Pre and the iPhone; all three have a different structure, different OS and a different market. Lets have a look at each of them individually:

Palm is here to stay!

June 10th, 2009

returns-2009

Palm Pre is off to a flyer and definitely the best iPhone competitor we have seen. For some reason I wouldn’t call it an iPhone competitor, rather see it as a brilliant smartphone – with its own identity. It offers equally good stuff to Blackberry addicts and iPhone fans. While many Palm critics have termed Pre as a failure even before its launched, I don’t care if they call it an also-ran or a copycat; the fact remain that Palm Pre will do well and Palm even better with the Web OS.

Not immediately creating a buzz equivalent to iPhone, Palm does hold the strength to give the Apple iPhone a run for its money in the near future. Here are my reasons for why Palm (more…)

Palm Fan shows his love for Pre by smashing iPhone

June 8th, 2009

smash_phone_pre

While Pre certainly is the best competition iPhone has seen so far things are getting more dramatic than we expected. A guy named John loves his Pre and he shows his love for the Pre by smashing his old iPhone with a steel hammer. While Pre fans smash iPhones or crash into Sprint store – Apple’s response aka iPhone 3.0 is coming in a few hours @ WWDC 09.

Woman crashes car into a Sprint store to get the Palm Pre

June 7th, 2009

pre_car_accident

There are a few who want a Palm Pre so desperately that instead of waiting for their phone in the Que, they would rather drive through the doors of a Sprint store. A woman in Chicago did the same to get her hands on a Pre.

A video captured all the actions, showing two employees running for their life inside the store. The emergency services arrived soon after the accident and took the woman to hospital who seems to be OK. The employees were quick enough to move away and avoid any serious injury.

Note: This might well be a PR stunt to promote the Pre. What surprises me is the fact that there were no customers in the store, possible but suspicions.

Official: Palm Pre coming on June 6th, priced $199

May 19th, 2009

Palm Pre

Sprint / Palm have finally confirmed the arrival of the much awaited iPhone Killer – PRE on 6th June. Pre would retail for $199 with a 2 year contract @ $199, just like the 8GB Apple iPhone 3G (however this pricing is after you claim a $100 mail-in rebate, so this thing would cost you $299 cash for now). The plans for the Palm Pre on sprint starts at $70 pm.

Whats interesting is that the Palm Pre is debuting just 2 days before WWDC 09, where Apple is expected unveil the nextgen iPhone(s). Hope Palm Pre lives up to the hype. No international release dates announced yet.

Update: Off-contract the Palm Pre is priced at $549. So we expect pricing of INR 27000+ in India.

Palm working on Pre Mini? Out by year end?

April 30th, 2009

palm-pre-mini

While we anxiously await the launch of the Palm Pre and the whole iPhone vs N97 vs Pre thing to get over, TechCrunch has something really exciting. As reported, Palm is working on a smaller / slimmer version of Palm Pre running the new webOS and would be launched later this year. The new device might drop the physical QWERTY and appeal to a completely new audience.

While the much rumored and leaked iPhone Nano didn’t happen, we feel that Palm Pre without a QWERTY is a good possibility to give it a more iPhone look and also reduce some weight. Excited anyone?

Palm Pre to be priced $150, N97 at $980!?

April 27th, 2009

The smartphone boom is about to see some intense war with all the biggies about to be revealed over the next few months. Nokia has the first S60 5th edition N97 with the Ovi store lined up against the Palm Pre, Samsung Android i7500, iPhone 3.0 and others (WM 6.5 etc).

Rumors suggest that Palm Pre might well sell for $150 in US (with contract of course) and we just heard N97 is being offered in the range of $793 – $980. Thats real high pricing, we really feel that Sony Ericsson didn’t see any great sales with the P1i and Xperia X1 only due to very high pricing initially. The market looks nicely poised for a nice showdown in the coming months. We are excited!…

Palm Pre coming on April 30? (Rumor)

March 29th, 2009

palm-pre-april-30_468

Will the Palm pull another rabbit from their hat and manage to release the much much awaited Palm Pre by April 30? Till now the rumored date was sometime in June. While the company has maintained the release date as “first half of 2009″ the www world is going crazy guessing the actual date.

Apparently a beta tester has tweeted that the Palm Pre would be released on 30th April. Thats just a month from now! This may sound true as we know that iPhone 3.0 would be revealed in June 2nd week and Palm would certainly like to ship out as many Pre’s as possible before that.

However no one can be certain and we term this as just another Rumor. But did we read Wimax phones? Just for the records the Wimax service for portable devices would be launched in India soon. All the cos await is a spectrum auction. We have learnt that wimax biggies in India are already testing their Wimax networks to work with portables / handhelds / notebooks.

PRE helps Palm raise some more $$

March 12th, 2009

The Palm WebOS is promosing. And the Palm Pre proves it! The expectation from this upcoming release is rising and Palm is seeing the effect already.

Palm sold some 23.125 million shares @ $6 per share to the public raising $83.9 million. This would allow the company to promote and launch the Pre smoothly.

Apparently Palm investor Elevation Partners made about $49 million from this sale, cashing in on the Pre hype!

RIP PalmOS – Jai ho webOS

February 12th, 2009

Palm CEO Ed Colligan has officilly confirmed that PalmOS is dead! Palm shall now focus on the new webOS that debuts with the Palm PRE. Windows Mobile is also in.

“We will transition to WebOS as our core operating system and will continue to support Windows Mobile products for the enterprise market. “

Ed also applied some ice to the Apple vs Palm situation and played down rumors of a upcoming legal battle between the two companies.

Palm Centro 2 to powered by webOS?

January 14th, 2009

The low cost Palm Centro that helped Palm to earn some $$ last year seems to be ready for an upgrade. And what better than the new Palm webOS to run on it. Palm PRE happens to be the first device offering the webOS, and the platform is certainly promsing with its card deck multitasking approach and synergy. As announced at CES, many more Palm devices on the platform are already in works.

So a low cost Centro 2 powered by webOS (and as per rumors this would be without the QWERTY, that means a larger touch screen) can really boost things for Palm. This would certainly compliment the Palm PRE. We are excited ;)
