Palm bringing a Pre upgrade to Verizon?

December 22nd, 2009

Palm is all set to reveal the road ahead next month at CES where it is almost certain that Verizon will get the webOS officially and possibly some new Palm handsets might show its face at the mega technology showcase. Recently it was spotted that Verizon is training its staff for to prepare for Palm handsets however no particular info on what handset is coming to Verizon was revealed. While most gusses were for the Palm Pre and the Pixi (both currently selling exclusively on Sprint in US), internal inventory records at Verizon suggest otherwise. Intomobile reports a new name Palm Pre Plus is what Verizon’s internal records is revealing.

There is a dim chance that the original Pre would come with a new name on a new carrier after completing a whole year of existance at CES 2010. So what does the PLUS suggest? Your guess is as good as ours :)

Palm tracking your location using the ‘Pre’

August 13th, 2009

Joey Hess has broken down the internal coding of the Pre webOS to find out some shocking information. It seems that Pre sends some information about you to Palm on a daily basis. Palm is not only tracking your installed applications and their usage, but also your location using your GPS chip.

“The first thing sent is intended to be my GPS location. It’s the same location I get if I open the map app on the Pre. Not very accurate in this case, but I’ve seen it be accurate enough to find my house before.” writes Joey in his blog.

Now we believe if not with the application usage, most of you might be worried about Palm tracking your GPS location on a daily basis. But do you know that you actually allowed Palm to do that to you? Yes, the Palm’s terms and conditions and privacy policy are broad enough to cover such information gathering by Palm. The terms and conditions not only allows Palm to access this information, but also allows Palm and its partners to use this information to offer you (more…)

GSM version of Palm Pre spotted, Asia launch rumors

June 30th, 2009

palm pre sim

Palm surely wants to go global and cash in on Pre success to the fullest. A GSM version of the Pre has been spotted with a SIM card slot. Though it is expected that Palm would give priority to the UK market for its GSM version, Asia might get its hands on the Pre soon enough.

In US, currently the Pre is tied to Sprint and Verizon is expected to get it early next year. We are also hearing from our sources in India that Vodafone is planning to launch the Pre later this year. Palm is surely here to stay!

Palm App Catalog reached 100,000 downloads

June 29th, 2009

palm-app-catalog-1million

It has only been 18 days since the Palm Pre was introduced and the Palm App Catalog has crossed the one million download mark. With an estimated 150,000 Pre handsets sold in the market, each one of these handsets have managed to download an average of 7 applications. Every single application has been estimated to be downloaded about 33,800 times on an average. With just 30 applications available in the App Catalog to a single device (Palm Pre) and only to the number 3 carrier of US, the numbers look more than impressive. With still a lot of customers waiting in the Que for their Palm handsets, looks like the APP Catalog is all set to beat the records of Apple’s App Store.

Apple may not ban ‘Pre’ from syncing with iTunes

June 18th, 2009

Yes, Apple has a bad repute with breaking jailbreaks, bricking iPhone’s, trying to deem 3rd party apps as illegal, locking its devices and making everything from its earphones to charger pins proprietary. But they might not go after the Palm Pre, which syncs with the iTunes posing as an iPod.

Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.

While this recent note on Apple’s support site wrt 3rd party media players has sparked off rumors that Apple is miffed with the Palm Pre and is working to disable its syncing with iTunes in future versions; this might not be specifcally targeted to the Pre. Allowing the Pre to sync with iTunes doesn’t hurt Apple as much as jailbreaking the iPhone does. As engadget notes “Apple would have to actively code in a USB node check to actually block syncing”.

Palm has already stepped on Apple’s shoes with multitouch on the Pre, this was followed by strong words from Apple, but no legal exchange between Apple and Palm took place. Though Palm did issue a statement that they respect others patents. I get a feeling its just the rivalry between Palm and Apple (with the iPhone as well as former Apple employees working for Palm) that gives fuel to rumors that Apple wants to blockout the Pre from iTunes. Apple has better things to do, more revolutionary products to develop & larger interests to secure before it spends time killing competition by such tactics.

Woman crashes car into a Sprint store to get the Palm Pre

June 7th, 2009

pre_car_accident

There are a few who want a Palm Pre so desperately that instead of waiting for their phone in the Que, they would rather drive through the doors of a Sprint store. A woman in Chicago did the same to get her hands on a Pre.

A video captured all the actions, showing two employees running for their life inside the store. The emergency services arrived soon after the accident and took the woman to hospital who seems to be OK. The employees were quick enough to move away and avoid any serious injury.

Note: This might well be a PR stunt to promote the Pre. What surprises me is the fact that there were no customers in the store, possible but suspicions.

Palm working on Pre Mini? Out by year end?

April 30th, 2009

palm-pre-mini

While we anxiously await the launch of the Palm Pre and the whole iPhone vs N97 vs Pre thing to get over, TechCrunch has something really exciting. As reported, Palm is working on a smaller / slimmer version of Palm Pre running the new webOS and would be launched later this year. The new device might drop the physical QWERTY and appeal to a completely new audience.

While the much rumored and leaked iPhone Nano didn’t happen, we feel that Palm Pre without a QWERTY is a good possibility to give it a more iPhone look and also reduce some weight. Excited anyone?

Palm Pre to be priced $150, N97 at $980!?

April 27th, 2009

The smartphone boom is about to see some intense war with all the biggies about to be revealed over the next few months. Nokia has the first S60 5th edition N97 with the Ovi store lined up against the Palm Pre, Samsung Android i7500, iPhone 3.0 and others (WM 6.5 etc).

Rumors suggest that Palm Pre might well sell for $150 in US (with contract of course) and we just heard N97 is being offered in the range of $793 – $980. Thats real high pricing, we really feel that Sony Ericsson didn’t see any great sales with the P1i and Xperia X1 only due to very high pricing initially. The market looks nicely poised for a nice showdown in the coming months. We are excited!…

Palm Pre coming on April 30? (Rumor)

March 29th, 2009

palm-pre-april-30_468

Will the Palm pull another rabbit from their hat and manage to release the much much awaited Palm Pre by April 30? Till now the rumored date was sometime in June. While the company has maintained the release date as “first half of 2009″ the www world is going crazy guessing the actual date.

Apparently a beta tester has tweeted that the Palm Pre would be released on 30th April. Thats just a month from now! This may sound true as we know that iPhone 3.0 would be revealed in June 2nd week and Palm would certainly like to ship out as many Pre’s as possible before that.

However no one can be certain and we term this as just another Rumor. But did we read Wimax phones? Just for the records the Wimax service for portable devices would be launched in India soon. All the cos await is a spectrum auction. We have learnt that wimax biggies in India are already testing their Wimax networks to work with portables / handhelds / notebooks.

Palm sold some 23.125 million shares @ $6 per share to the public raising $83.9 million. This would allow the company to promote and launch the Pre smoothly.

Apparently Palm investor Elevation Partners made about $49 million from this sale, cashing in on the Pre hype!
