Hands-on with the Samsung Corby TXT: Quick Review
December 6th, 2009 by Annkur

Samsung is on a roll with the ‘need-only-tech’ working fabulously for the Korean consumer electronics giant. The Star and original Corby did well and Samsung has officially announced that it has sold over 50 million touchscreen mobiles till date, and 40 million of those were in 2009 alone.

Corby TXT and Corby S3653
The recently launched Corby TXT is another low cost trendy phone that looks to cash in on the non-business youth market. The Corby TXT has curves very similar to the original Corby but it replaces the touchscreen with a physical QWERTY keypad. The attempt here is to cash in on the business looks of a Blackberry, mix it with some fashion and target the youth. Here is a quick look at the Corby TXT features:
- GSM / EDGE / GPRS 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
- 2 megapixel camera
- 40mb internal memory + MicroSD card
- Mini USB port
- FM Radio
- 80 mAh battery
- Weight: 94 gms
While the idea of a full keyboard on a non-business phone is good, I feel that the keyboard fails miserably in terms of usability. The idea of having a physical keyboard is to enable faster typing and not be there only for the looks, and the clumsy, non crispy plastic buttons makes the Corby TXT horrible. Specially for someone who is used to the Palm Treo and Nokia E-series.

Just to ensure that I am not biased, I allowed a friend (who uses a simple bar phone) to play with the QWERTY keypad for a few minutes and he wasn’t impressed (he didn’t manage to type well either).
If you keep the bad keyboard aside, the TXT has a very responsive UI. The lightweight OS makes the device easy to use and provides something good enough for basic users. FM radio, a decent camera, a 3.5mm audio jack and trendy looks at a price point of approximately Rs. 8000 is good for now. But the Nokia E63 (which I need not mention is a good smartphone with all the features that Corby TXT boasts) is available for Rs. 11000. The Nokia 5230 / 5530 will also be hitting the shelves in a few weeks and the original Corby would also get a Nokia competitor. That’s a challenge for Samsung. For the moment if you are a basic user and looking to get a Corby TXT, make sure you are comfortable with the QWERTY keypad and don’t expect too much anything on the mobile internet side, both the Corby and the TXT are horrible for internet usage.
We also got our hands on the Corby Mate, more on that coming soon
