Wikireader: Portable Wikipedia for the Information Hungry
October 15th, 2009 by Kunal

Wikipedia is one of the most popular online so search for information about everything under the sun. Openmoko now brings this encyclopedia within easy reach in the form of its palm-sized gadget – the “Wikireader”! The Wikireader is able to store over 3 million Wikipedia articles and offers the option of reading them offline.
Wikireader has only three buttons for searching, viewing history and browsing random articles. The scrolling is done using the capacitive touchscreen. The Wikireader is powered by 2 AAA batteries and can run for months on them. With constantly updating Wikipedia, information enthusiasts can have the Wikireader be updated on a quarterly basis for free.
microSD card updates are also available for a subscription fees of US$29. Wikireader is currently available from Amazon for US$99.

interesting to see how platforms like openmoko are evolving, which didn’t do so well commercially in a cellphone. However do we need a $99 wikipedia reader? wouldn’t a good mobile app work better?
I believe the wap version of the website is enough for me. But i would like to have such a gadget for my school going sister. A mobile phone with GPRS would not be relevent to her.
