Yes, I read the news: Google OS
July 9th, 2009 by Annkur

Accept for a few random tweets I had nothing much to say on the Google OS yet. But after all the buzz yesterday (Read Google Vs Microsoft, Google OS vs Windows), I see very clearly that Google announced something, people saw something else. I have read the original Google blogpost (followed up by a Faq’s today) over and over again and I see no mention of
a) This being a full fleged OS
b) Competing with Windows OS anytime in the near future, (rather bringing in a new approach to netbooks)
So if you are still unclear about what I am speaking, Google just dropped a bomb yesterday with the announcement of the Google Chrome OS. Its not that we didn’t hear about it before, but it was always believed to be an extension of Android, instead of an all new platform…
today, we’re announcing a new project that’s a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It’s our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be. Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks.
While Microsoft boldly claims to control 96% of netbook market (along with the majority in desktop OS market); Google still targets the web! With this new OS Google wants to ensure a better share of the internet crowd (or rather deepen its involvement with the Internet Janta). The day broadband is down at my place, I hardly switch it on my computer. Such is our lives today, where we setup a $1000 system but it is largely fueled by the $15pm internet connection.
The entire Netbook boom (20% of all laptop sales) is a big realization for the public that they want to use the Internet + some basic applications most of the time. Google’s focus on mobile (Read Android, Apps) is fueled by the growth of Mobile Internet and the same funda goes behind the Chrome OS announced yesterday (IMO). Chrome OS is open source and would be free. Being a 2009 / 2010 development product (and of course the fact that its Open Source) makes it much more comfortable and compatible with the low power / lite hardware that netbooks carry. I feel to quite an extent this is much on the lines of the vision behind CrunchPad that TechCrunch (Michael Arrington) is developing. If you read the original Google announcement – its clear that Chrome OS is for the people who believe that everything they need to store and access would be / cane be on the web.
For this very same reason I feel its stupid to ask for Adobe Photoshop and other heavy applications to run on Google OS, or even ask if this would support all existing hardware devices (driver issues etc). Come on, its a NETBOOK OS for now!
A lot has been written about this OS that will see they day of light sometime in the second half of 2010. So why not just listen to it and wait till it happens… Just like Android, in the first 6 months of launch – Do not expect too many Chrome OS powered devices nor should you expect the Chrome OS to unveil its full potential (even in the netbook markets) by 2011. But one thing is for sure – Google believes that the future is in the Cloud … Mobile internet, netbooks etc.
