Align several mobile phones to make one large screen (patent)

March 7th, 2010

Yes weird as it sounds and geeky for sure! The idea of combining several cellphone displays by just placing them next to each other is certainly impressive and Motoorla is on it (the only problem is I don’t see a very practical use of this). According to this patent (“Reconfigurable Multiple-Screen Display”) filed by Motorola you can stream a video in parts on more than one cellphone at once and thus create a larger output by aligning the displays of these cellphones next to each other. See the diagram below to get some clarity:

Motorola Motosplit: Multi-slide touchscreen QWERTY?

February 8th, 2010

When it comes to design, Motorola is coming out with something entirely new and impressive these days. After a backwords flipping QWERTY with the Motorola Backflip, here comes multiple orientation keyboard phone — Motosplit. The rumored Motosplit is expected to have a unique form-factor, according to the leaked design image shown above. The phone is rumored to be featuring a multi-sliding keyboard. The keyboard can be a numeric keypad as well as a full QWERTY because it uses touch sensitive monochrome displays for keys.

The cut-outs for the ‘touch-keys’ match the counter of a standard finger to make typing easier. The key label would change according to the slide layout in use. The keyboard can be slide downwards for use as a standard numerical keypad and can also slide sideways to be used as QWERTY in landscape mode.

Other rumored specifications include a screen-size same as that of the Motorola Droid (3.7“, 480 x 854) and a snapdragon 1GHz processor. The phone is expected to be official in Q3 2010.

Motorola CEO confirms another Google phone, NexusTwo?

January 29th, 2010

Motorola CEO Mr Sanjay Jha revealed during their last quarter earnings call that they are indeed working on a Google branded phone. I can imagine that a co like Motorola that is making a comeback to the mobile arena and going profitable again with good releases like the Droid, needs to gather some media spotlight / momentum before it actually rolls out devices and this early disclosure of ‘Motoogle‘ phone is nothing but that. Mr Jha didn’t give any specific details on the Google branded phone, but this announcement comes just days after we heard the Droid 2 / Nexus 2 report. So did we really see the next Google phone as pictures below?

Apple / Palm often claim their software+hardware integration is unmatched. And perhaps this is where Google and Microsoft are now working towards, by closely working with handset manufacturers to (more…)

New Motorola Droid aka Nexus Two spotted?

January 17th, 2010

With Android OS version 2.x Google has really went aggressive in the smartphone market. They pushed the Motorola Droid and the Nexus One beyond belief and managed to create a good hype for the Android superphones. Now this alien looking (Droid II?) that you see in the picture above has leaked out to wow us. Dubbed the Motorola Shadow Phantom this device has the MotoDroid DNA, but rumors suggest that this might be the upcoming upgrade to the Google Nexus (Nexus Two?).

Fueling the rumors of Motorola making the next update to the Google Nexus series was Mr Sanjay Jha’s (CEO Motorlola) presence during the original Nexus One (made by HTC) launch. As engadget points out, this may be nothing more than a fan made render, but this one sure looks sexy. Personally though the little edge on the bottom for just a strap isn’t something I would expect in smartphones of 2010, enough for me to mark this as a fake. Another shot after the break. (more…)

Motorola Droid has a security flaw

January 12th, 2010

The Motorola Droid running Android OS v2.1 has a minor security flaw which makes the phone data easily accessible by anyone. The Droid has a security lock which when active requires an unlock pattern in order to access the phone’s data. The bug easily bypasses this security lock when the user receives a call. (This should be a issue with Android v 2.0 and Droid being the only handset featuring it)

On  receiving a call, pressing the “Back” icon makes (more…)

CES 2010: Motorola Backflip becomes official (Video)

January 7th, 2010

Motorola has officially announced the Motorola Backflip, the phone with a unique form factor we told you about. The Motorolla Backflip is a full touchscreen on the front and a full QWERTY keyboard at the back. Instead of sliding out the keyboard, the user needs to pull the front up and flip it backwards to get the phone in the typing position. Oh, and not to miss… it runs Android 2.1.

The Motorola Backflip is promoted as the ultimate social networking phone though the design of the Ice Phone tripleflip we saw last year at CES was much more appealing. The phone features Motorola’s MOTOBLUR (more…)

January 1st, 2010

Verizon Band-Aid: Solution to Droid loose battery cover problem?

December 24th, 2009

droid_verizon_bandaid

A number of users have reported an issue with a loose battery cover on the Motorola Droid. Flicker user Anticitizen had gone to  Verizon to rectify the same issue and got “an answer” in the form of a Verizon Band-Aid, as shown above.

A band-aid to for a loose battery cover on a $200 phone? Verizon seriously needs to develop a better solution to the problem.

Motorola’s Android app store smoked out

December 13th, 2009

shop4apps

Motorola is working on its web-based application store for Android called “SHOP4APPS”. Android and Me got a sneak peek of the application store during its testing.

Are they building an application store for just a couple of devices? Motorola sure sees a bright future for itself in Android. With the Android Market already in place, an introduction of a Motorola-branded Android application store would give its users more options to shop for apps.

The purchase of applications can be done through (more…)

Verizon confirms Android V2.01 for Droid before year end

December 4th, 2009

Droid users are in for a early update with some bug fixes and ‘framework behavioral changes’ coming in the v2.01 of Android OS. Verizon has confirmed that the update shall be pushed Over-the-air in coming weeks. 2.01 also includes a “Sync Tester” application to provide quick and easy testing of third-party sync adapters. Google has also outed a new build of the v1.6.

The update might also fix an autofocus issue with the Droid camera that became popular recently with the bug being triggered by the date. The Droid also takes a new shot at iPhone with its new commercial. So is the iPhone all about look? I guess not, but Verizon remains aggressive  with the Droid vs iPhone hype. Droid’s publicity stunt via Apple’s AppStore failed

December 1st, 2009

idroidMotorola Droid, the closest competitor to the iPhone, tried to gain some publicity through the iPhone platform (Update: the author didn’t meant to imply that Motorola pushed this app via the developer). The handset, which is the first one to be powered by Android 2.0, introduced an application for the iPhone. The app obviously didn’t make it through the AppStore censors.

The iDroid application developed by Sawvv App did nothing but advertise the Motorola Droid through the AppStore. It showed the glowing red droid eye on the home screen. A click on the droid eye would show the different features of the Motorola Droid in bullet points. The features mostly included the ones that were the shortcomings of the iPhone, such as the slide-out QWERTY keypad, the ability to run multiple applications, and the (more…)

Motorola Crush – affordable touchscreen handset for $50

November 23rd, 2009

motorola crush

If there is something that the LG Cookie, Samsung Star/Corby, and the upcoming Nokia 5230 has taught Motorola, it’s the potential of a low-cost touchscreen. It seems that Motorola has taken this to heart and is hitting this segment with “Crush”. Crush has a simple candybar handset design that resembles the Dell Mini 3i, featuring a capacitive touchscreen and two buttons on the top (lock and power). With a 2 year contract and a $50 mail-in rebate, US Cellular will probably look to sell more than just a handful of this phone. But having something like the Palm Pixi available at $99 certainly ‘crushes’ the MotoCrush. I need not mention here but this ain’t gonna bring ground breaking sales to either Motorola or US Cellular.

No information on both the internal memory and the OS is provided, but this phone probably Linux, as seen in the A760 / A1200 series from Motorola.

Motorola Droid coming to Verizon on Nov. 6

October 29th, 2009

verizon-motorola-droid

Everytime an overpriced touchscreen cellphone is announced, it instantly gets the title of an “iPhone killer”. Of course none of them have managed to come close to fulfilling the title. We are not trying to follow the trend here, but the latest handset to be released by Motorola is one that can quite possibly be an ‘Iphone Killer’. The phone we are talking about is the Motorola Droid!

Android OS 2.0 coming with Motorola Droid on Verizon!

October 19th, 2009

sholes_MotorolaDroid-4

Verizon has kicked off a campaign promoting the upcoming smartphone ‘Droid’. Expected to go on sale sometime in November, the Droid is Verizon’s response to the Apple iPhone. The advertising campaign ‘Droid Does’ has been targeting the iPhone drawbacks aggressively on the web aswell as television. And to fuel the fire we have a series of leaks by BGR, that shows off the Android OS 2.0 and the Motorola Sholes that we saw earlier. Sholes is branded as Droid by Verizon and the early review looks positive. Both Verizon and Motorola are (more…)

Motorola announces its first Android: Cliq / Dext

September 12th, 2009

motorola android cliq

Motorola has went official with its first Android device: Cliq. Motorola has a custom UI called the MotoBlur running on the Android OS, which sure gives the HTC’s Sense UI a run for its money. T-Mobile would launch the Moto Android in US as Cliq and globally it shall be branded as the ‘Dext’ featuring a 3G, full QWERTY keyboard, 3.1″ touchscreen, 5MP camera, GPS, WiFi and a 3.5mm headphone jack. While Palm has learnt its lesson and integrated a minimum of 8GB internal memory, I wonder what stops Motorola from doing the same. Cliq has 512mb of internal storage and supports MicroSD memory of upto 32GB.

Motorola has identified the growing momentum of social media and its synergy with smartphone users. The MotoBlur lets you manage your online presence at one place and you can update your statues on all your favorite social networks all at once. Twitter, Facebook, Picasa, Gmail, Myspace etc all find their place in the UI. Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha stressed the importance of a mobile OS that supports multithreaded multitasking, which sure is an area where the Android OS betters the iPhone.

Cliq / Dext is one of the many Android handsets that are hitting the stores before year end and this surely isn’t something that would revolutionize the smartphone market. But we hope this to be the beginning of a revival for Motorola.
