HP not looking to use Palm for smartphone market

And thats exactly where they broke my heart. I sat on the fence with my fingers crossed, hoping to have some cool webOS handset in India (specially with HP putting its weight behind Palm), but that seems to be a fading hope. HP just made it official that they didn’t acquire Palm to be in the smartphone business.Yes, they actually spent over a billion dollars for Palm’s IP and getting webOS to their ‘small form-factor web-connected devices’ and for no love for the smartphone potential. If there is something I can tell HP, guys you are wasting an opportunity!

We didn’t buy Palm to be in the smartphone business. And I tell people that, but it doesn’t seem to resonate well. We bought it for the IP. The WebOS is one of the two ground-up pieces of software that is built as a web operating environment…We have tens of millions of HP small form factor web-connected devices… HP CEO, Mark Hurd (via engadget)

Suddenly the news of Android acquiring talent from Palm seems more delightful than ever before. And now we know exactly whats going to happen in the smartphone business. A bloody, battle between the iPhone and Android.

Update: Good they clarified. HP says it’s in the smartphone market, after all
