Both Intel and AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) are said to be working on the release of their six core offerings. In the intensely competitive chip market, Intel seems to be taking the first move with its 6 core CPU expected to hit the markets by March end (Intel 6 core lineup is referred as Gulftown). According to Digitimes the fist Intel chip would be Core i7-980X costing $1000 upwards.
On the other hand AMD is expected to be a little late with its six-core offering and would come out with the Phenom II X6 1075T, 1055T and 1035T (all three built on 45nm process) in May. This is expected to come along with the quad-core Phenom II X4 960T. The AMD six-core processors are built on the Thuban architecture, this brings 3MB of L2 cache and 6MB of L3 cache – Exciting!

Special thanks to @sengupta (Blog) for the interview on behalf of OnlyGizmos
Dr. Ajay Bhatt certainly knows how to use self deprecatory humour well. He began his lecture by screening this clip of him trying to emulate the rockstar image portrayed by the actor playing him in the famous “Our rockstars aren’t like your rockstars” ad.
Though Dr. Ajay Bhatt is the co-inventor of the USB, his lecture at IITB’s TechFest focused primarily on the future of mobile computing. He emphasized the “Complete Mobile Experience” as being one that balances performance, ease of use, software and internet compatibility, battery life, new form factors and connectivity.
He introduced new developments such as Intel’s Turbo Boost- a mechanism that turns off some of the CPU/GPU cores when not required; My WiFi- using WiFi in an ad-hoc mode without the need of an access point; and cooling laptop cores using a jet of air inspired by jet engine technology.
He ended the lecture- as he began- on a hilarious note. He compared Moore’s Law to the automotive industry- saying that if Moore’s Law were applicable to the automotive industry, cars today would cost Rs. 1.36, run at a top speed of 292,044kmph and have a fuel efficiency of 42,514km/l.
We caught up with Dr. Bhatt after the lecture for a short chat. Since he didn’t dwell much on USB, we asked him a couple of questions regarding the topic- particularly the upcoming USB 3.0. We asked him why Intel isn’t pushing it harder considering the work it’s put in. We also talked about Light Peak, his advice for students keen on following his path, wireless charging, multicore computing, the challenges he faced in pushing USB forward and why he doesn’t appear in the Intel Rockstar ads.

Intel certainly looks to prove Moore’s Law right with its bunch of announcements at CES 2010. The company’s CEO Paul Otellini made some big announcements during his keynote.
Here we summarize it for you :
- Intel’s AppUp Center is an app store with software’s / games made for Netbooks (just as we heard earlier). Currently in Beta, it works on Windows and Mobilin (mobile Linux). Also, the company is associating itself with Acer, Asus, Dell, and Samsung to create manufacturer-specific apps for their laptops. Developers will be linked via Atom Developer Program. The company says AppUp Store is focused at the netbook-centric Atom processor.
- Moresetown an Atom-based, Mobilin-driven smart phone made by LG, that brings multipoint, 3-way split-screen video-conferencing on the device itself.
- LightPeak (the Apple backed technology): a single-cable 10Gbps standard that enables the download of a Blu-ray movie in less than 30 seconds. That’s faster than even USB 3.0. Intel aims to provide computing and transfer power for 3D content in homes, including making your own 3D movies at home.
- A holographic glass digital display that can “digitally visually tag actual physical objects sitting behind it.” What Visual Tagging means (more…)

In what is being called a ‘new era’ in the chip industry, Intel and AMD have settled their court cases, antitrust proceedings and patent disputes with the latter getting $1.25 billion along with several other agreements. For years Intel and AMD have been fighting each other in courtrooms over several issues and the bad blood was such that AMD had also launched a website in 2007, apparently to tell people about its proceedings against Intel. Intel was also fined $1.45 bln by the European Union earlier this year for illegal sales tactics. However the settlement today is certainly a win win for both parties and certainly a good sign for the consumers and the chip industry. (more…)

So its not just the computer OS that Intel is working on, apparently Nokia and Intel are together developing a Linux based Mobile Operating System. The project is labeled oFono.
Intel and Nokia are pleased to jointly announce the oFono project, an open source project for developing an open source telephony solution. oFono.org is a place to bring developers together around designing an infrastructure for building mobile telephony (GSM/UMTS) applications.
While we haven’t seen Nokia work on Android so far, this might be their answer. However we cannot be sure if its just a Mobile OS running on smartphones or more than that!

Wouldn’t it be great if your OS booted in just 2 seconds? There will be no need for sleep modes and hibernating. Intel is working on Linux based OS that would boot in 2 seconds with the Intel atom. The OS which is already in its beta testing phase has been named Moblin.
If Intel pulls out this one then Moblin would be the fastest booting OS in the world. “We think that two second boot is possible.” says Imhad Sousou, director of Intel’s Open Source Technology Center. The 2 seconds booting OS will be ideal for Netbooks and MIDs.
A 2 sec booting for a OS would be faster than what it takes for a SMS to open on my Nokia (takes 30-40 secs). This should please Netbook owners running Linux OS, but faster loading time isn’t a luxury that will make me switch from WinXP unless it supports Ms-office and other basic utilities well enough.

Search engine giant Google and chip maker Intel have thrown their weight behind a massive scheme to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
The plan aims to cut the amount of electricity computers consume in half by 2010 using existing power-saving technologies. Currently, the average PC wastes about half of the power it consumes, while the average server squanders about one-third, officials said. The scheme is expected to cut emissions by 54 million tonnes a year – equal to 11 million cars or 20 coal-fired power plants, company officials say.
”Let’s create a more efficient IT industry by driving up the efficiency of computers,” said Pat Gelsinger, senior vice president for Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group. ”We think we can have huge savings in terms of carbon footprint and energy costs.”
IT is estimated that using energy-efficient technology would make computers about $20.

Intel’s Mobile Metro laptop which was co-created with Ziba Design certainly deserves an honorable mention for its thickness, cutting an impossible figure of 0.7″ while weighing a wee bit above 1kg. Intel has promised that they will throw in the fastest and most efficient components into the champagne-toned magnesium chassis, with WiFi, EV-DO, and WiMax connectivity included. Not only that, you get a flash-based memory hard drive and a 14 hours battery life. Somebody pinch me already. Better start saving for one today if it were to be released at the end of this year at best.
When Intel asked designers to build a better laptop, its instructions were simple, really. The machine has to be fashionable, able to connect to all manner of wireless networks, and full of the latest, fastest computing capabilities.
Consumers, as a result, are a big driver for sales. And more than ever, consumer-buying choices are influenced not just by function, but form. At the same time, many PC makers have given short shrift to design in hopes of keeping costs at a minimum.
That’s where Intel, with Ziba, hope to make their mark. “Intel wants to stimulate the conversation,” says Roger Kay, president of consultancy Endpoint Technologies Associates. Besides making the machine thin, they’re also using materials aimed to communicate high quality and coolness. Made of champagne-colored magnesium, the laptop is decorated with subtle gold accents.

US chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. unveiled details of its upcoming mobile processor, code-named Griffin, as well as the platform that will support it, code-named Puma at a press conference in Tokyo on Friday.
With the release of its first-ever chip platform designed specifically for notebook personal computers, AMD is apparently making attempts to catch up with Intel Corp as Centrino notebook platform, formerly code-named Santa Rosa.
‘AMD said that one of its main goals in acquiring ATI was to create more robust computer platforms. Puma confirms that the company is now heading down that path. AMD Fellow Maurice Steinman, one of the main engineers for Griffin, AMDs next generation notebook processor, told me that the chip?s later stages of its development included a high level of collaboration between AMD processor designers and ATI chipset engineers. The higher level of collaboration was vital in that AMD will combine Griffin with the AMD RS780 chipset (designed by ATI) to create form Puma.
AMD produced the first prototype Griffin processors about six weeks ago Steinman had one on hand at our meeting and showed it rendering video and will begin sampling them to PC makers soon. Notebooks based on the Puma platform will hit the market by mid-2008.
Some would argue that Puma is simply AMD catching up to Intel. Thats true on many levels. Puma follows a similar path to Intels Centrino notebook platform. Centrino platforms pair Intels notebook processor, the Core 2 Duo, with its own chipsets and wireless modules.
Santa Rosa, the latest Centrino iteration couples the Core 2 Duo with a mobile 965 chipset and IntelPRO wirless module. AMD doesnt currently have an overarching brand name for its mobile platform, right now. Nor does it make wireless modules. But AMD is clearly positioning Puma as its platform of choice for notebooks.’
