Remember how we are awed by the Talking robots which appear in Movies. Be it Flubber with the flying talking Robot, or the sweet little Wall-E, they all amaze us. But in a few years Movies will not be the only platform you will be seeing these computers in, they will be there with us, in our homes. Artificial Intelligence, Speech Recognition and Machine Vision will be the key features on which the next generation of Computers will be based, says Google’s director of research Peter Norvig. “I think we are always reinventing things, which I think is good,” he says candidly. “You always try to attract the best people, and you can’t attract a person whose job is to just maintain something that was built 10 years ago. The top people don’t want to do that, they want to invent their own.”
The technical problems and raised cost which were holding the Talking Computers back from coming into the reality are being ruled out, as a result Companies and Researchers are devoting more time to bring the next generation computers into reality. Products like Google’s StreetView and the onset of augmented reality give a tantalizing glimpse of what’s possible in terms of machine vision and speech recognition.
