Mi Max 2 Launched: 5300mAh Battery, 6.4-inch FHD Display and Snapdragon 625

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has finally unveiled the Mi Max 2 in an event held today in New Delhi. The brand has been teasing about the phone on social media since a few days with the tagline ‘Big is Back’. Mi Max 2 is the second generation of a phablet launched previous year with the same name. With this launch, it seems like Xiaomi is betting high on devices with bigger screens and probably sees potential in this size segment.

Apart from providing a stellar multimedia and multitasking experience, the huge 6.44-inch Full HD display also offers some other perks. Among the biggest benefits of the phone’s massive size is the 5,300mAh battery. Xiaomi claims this battery to last 2 days of normal usage. It comes with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 support as well, which ensures 0 to 68% charge in just 1 hour. The company also claims that the phone shall provide 57 hours of talktime or 18 hours of video playback, both of which is totally amazing.

Mi Max 2 follows a slightly different design theme than other Mi phones. Although it has a full metal unibody design, the phone boasts of antenna bands instead of a plastic patch on the top and bottom. This approach looks far better and it would be great to see it in other Xiaomi phones. The fingerprint scanner is positioned at the back. On a phone this big, placing the scanner on the back is a tricky quotient since it might be a bit difficult to reach. Mi Max 2 is aesthetically appealing and is probably one of the better looking phones in this screen size.

Both the cameras in Mi Max 2 seem pretty decent on paper. It has a 12MP rear sensor by Sony with a pixel size of 1.25μm, PDAF and a dual-tone LED flash for low-light photography. Selfie lovers get a 8MP sensor on the front. Whether these cameras perform good is something we might have to wait till we actually get to use the phone.

The phone seems quite impressive in terms of performance as well. It is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor coupled with 4GB of RAM. There are two variants of the phone when it comes to storage, a 64GB version and another 128GB one. For those looking to expand the storage will have to settle for using a single SIM, as the phone has a hybrid slot. So, you will have to choose between either an extra SIM or extra storage.

The phone runs MIUI 8 on top of Android Marshmallow 6.0. Since Xiaomi is going to release MIUI 9 on Android Nougat 7.0 within a month, the Mi Max 2 might be eligible to get this software update.

Mi Max 2 is priced at Rs. 16,999 and is available for purchase starting 27th July on all the partnered online and offline partners. You can also purchase it from Mi’s official site and its Home app on 20th June since Mi is celebrating its 3rd anniversary on that day.
