RIM has finally released the much awaited update to its beleaguered tablet, the Playbook. This update which RIM had promised to issue last year, just 60 days after the launch of the Playbook has been in the limbo ever since. Initially, they delayed the update to summer, then to October 2011 and finally to February 2012!
As promised last year, the Playbook 2.0 update endows the Playbook with quite a bit of new, much wanted functionalities. To start with, the much sought after e-mail client has been integrated on to the Playbook. In case you were in a cave for the past year or so, let us giving you a little heads up about the fact that the Playbook originally came sans an email client. Quite ironical for a BlackBerry – a brand that is known for its email capabilities. Anyway, that aberration has been fixed with this update. Another new addition is something known as the BlackBerry Bridge which allows users to control their Playbook using their Blackberry smartphones.
The Playbook would also get the much talked about ability to run apps from the Android Market – which should help the tablet gain some followers. All said, it remains to be seen if this late update does give some sort of fillip to the fortunes of the Playbook.
If you are hoping that this update will endow the Playbook with BBM abilities, let us inform you that you would have to wait for that to happen as well. Integration of BBM on to the Playbook was a long standing demand from Playbook users and users would have to wait for the enxt update from RIM to get that. Nothing is confirmed as of now though, with a spokesperson from the company just confirming that they are indeed working on BBM integration on the Playbook.
Anyway, if you happen to have a spare Playbook lying around, its time you get it updated. As always, this one is a free, over the air update. Happy updating!
