Sharp Brings Four New Handsets To India

Sharp has announced the launch of as many as four new handsets in India. The new phones are priced between Rs 6,499 and Rs 17,999 with all of them being touted to be multimedia friendly devices. Almost all of these devices share a “Japanese” look and would be available starting next month. The new phones are known as Alice, Blink, Tango and Cyborg. Let’s now see what these devices have in store for you.

The cheapest of the lot is the “Blink” which is a clamshell phone with dual SIM support. Priced at Rs.6499, this could be a decent phone in its price segment. That said, it does look a tad plasticky. With cheaper, well spec-ed Chinese phones and handsets from established handset makers including Nokia and Samsung already battling it out in this price range, it would be a herculean task for Sharp to gain some momentum in the India market with a handset like this.

Then we have the “Alice”, which is slightly up the price ladder.  This phone is touted to be a social networking friendly phone that would compare well with the entire Samsung Corby lineup. But we wonder if the price of Rs. 8,499 is justified for this phone.

Next up, we have the Cyborg which is arguably the most distinct of the entire lot. The Cyborg boasts of what Sharp calls a “Cycloid” form factor. This is basically a clamshell phone with a twistable display and a 3.3 megapixel camera. This phone is priced at Rs. 16,999.  Quite an interesting device – but the pricing of this device puts it near decent smartphone territory – and this ain’t one.

The most expensive of the lot is the Tango which is again, a  3G clamshell phone. This one gets a a 5 megapixel camera, a 2.9-inch display and a gravity sensor. The Tango will be available at Rs 17,999.

Note that none of the four devices mentioned here are smartphones.  All these devices run  Sharp’s proprietary featurephone OS. Hopefully, we would be seeing these devices in the flesh very soon for a possible review!

Do you think these devices, going by the features and the price would be a hit here in India?
