Apple press con: our six fearless predictions

With the Apple press conference hours away, it was time for us to jump into foretelling mode and putting our necks on the line, come up with predictions on what the next hours will have in store. Of course, it is no easy task given the fact that the Cupertino company not only likes to keep its cards close to its chest, but is actually one of the few outfits that manages to do so as well (the rest tend to leak a lot more, but THAT is another story for another time). So without further ado, here are our six predictions for what will – and will not – transpire tonight

  1. A new iPod touch: The iPod touch has always fit snugly into the iphone-without-the-phone space, so with the launch of the iPhone 4, we have already been counting down to a new iPod touch with retina display. We also expect Apple to finally plonk a couple of cameras on it to enable video calling over Wi-Fi.
  2. New iPod Nano: We are not too sure whether there will actually be a transformation of the iPod Nano into the small square shaped touchscreen device that some folks are predicting, but we are expecting an upgrade with a better camera. HD video? You never know. We are hoping, we are hoping.
  3. New iTunes: There is every indication that iTunes will get a good rejigging with perhaps even a web avatar coming into existence. We just hope it becomes easier to use, truth be told. And lighter to download, while they are about it.
  4. iOS 4 for iPad: Multi-tasking and wallpaper jiggling should come to the iPad with the launch of a version of iOS 4 for it. We had been told that it would come in September and well, September is here, if you get our drift. And no, contrary to the speculation going on in some circles, we are not too sure that Apple will charge for it – after all, they made the iOS upgrade free for the iPod touch, so why charge for the iPad?
  5. New iOS 4: We would be VERY surprised if Apple came out with a version of the iOS 4 for the iPad and did not throw in some upgrades for the iOS for iPhone and iPod touch too.
  6. No white iPhone 4: We are reasonably sure that Apple will not be showing the world the white iPhone. From all accounts, this looks like an iPod press con and we are sure Jobs would not like the Godphone to steal its thunder.
