Finally there is some official word on when the iPhone 3GS launching in India. Reuters reports that Airtel has confirmed a deal with Apple Inc to sell the iPhone 3GS in India. Delayed for several months now, the 3GS was expected launch last year in August, however given the green signal by Airtel now, we await the pricing details and availability.
While iPad is launching in two weeks, we are still waiting for the 3GS. Would you buy the 3GS or skip it in favor of the iPhone 4G?

The wait for iPhone 3GSs official unveiling in India has been way too long and event the most die hard Apple fans that I know have given up and purchased a 3GS from the grey market already. However we now hear (or rather our friends over at Fonearena
) that the iPhone 3GS would be launched by Apple in India tomorrow i.e. 15th March 2010 with 4 operators. To my surprise Airtel has been dropped off according to this rumor. Last year we had seen Vodafone actually pushed iPhone aside and promoted Blackberry, but then given the market size you never know if Airtel dumped iPhone or its Apple taking the call! This time around Vodafone, Reliance, Aircel and Bharti would carry the phone officially in India (remember its still a rumor).
The issue now isn’t what price Apple would launch the iPhone 3GS for or if Bharti would offer 3G plans for the same or not – the iPhone 4G expected in June motivates people to wait a little more (you can’t blame them for their patience, Apple!). Just yesterday (before I heard this rumor) I happened to discuss with a friend about the iPhone 4G and he immediately shelved his 3GS plans
. Does Apple really expect to sell 3GS in India with the iPhone 4th generation expected to be out (atleast in US) by June end?
Thx Varun

Blackberry remains the highest selling smartphone in the US, thanks to the plethora of business handsets it has to offer. One company that is fast catching up (and currently in no 2 position) is the Apple iPhone. Analyst prediction says that the iPhone would overtake Blackberry in sales sometime in 2011.
RIM’s touchscreen attempt with the Blackberry has failed to matchup and failed to counter the touch hype that iPhone has created. Meantime the iPhone 3GS has went on to be the best selling iPhone ever with Apple unable to go ahead with its global roll out as scheduled due to stock issues. Apple is expected to nab a 11% market share where as RIM Blackberry is seen at 8% in 2011. While a lot (more…)

Its a routine report every year to predict that Apple products would strain NAND flash memory supplies. Ever since the iPod was a hit, Apple has become a major consumer of NANA flash memory and the demand from Apple has only increased with the success of the iPhone in recent years. So just as I looked to jump over the title of this Digitimes report that reads ‘iPhone to strain NAND flash supply for 2010, says iSuppli’; something hit my eye – An average of 35.2GB of NAND will be used in each iPhone sold in 2010.
Now how can that be possible with the iPhone 3GS only being available in 16GB & 32GB variants? Certainly this points towards the iPhone 4th Gen having a 64GB (or more?) capacity. Though I might be wrong with iPod touch already being available in 64GB variant and iSuppli might well have bundled iPod touch under the iPhone term, you never know what really rolls out these analyst estimates!

GPS on phone is now something very common and just one of the things the smartphone boom has brought to us. As much as these mobiles threat the digital camera market, portable GPS navigation devices have now become one of the endangered species. Till recently software and hardware for GPS navigation systems was a separate business, but over the last few months the dynamics of this market has changed. Google made its big announcement by throwing in its free navigation software on the android, engadget pointed out the sharp fall TomTom and Garmin took.
The google app wasn’t really a killer though it had its own charm and goodness. But the requirement of a continuous Internet connection (atleast in the current beta form) sinks it. Add to that only US support for now. We know that Google maps come together from as many as 6 teams coming together and they would certainly do better things in time to come, but what has really acted as a catalyst to the entire situation is the entry of Ovi maps to the scene. ContactFlow may be new for App Store but was available previously for jailbreaked iPhones. The application allows iPhone users to browse through their contacts in a cover flow style. Its similar to browsing albums on an iPod.
While flipping through the contacts, the user needs to tap on a particular contact to flip the picture for calling options. The options involve calling, SMS and e-mail. The application is a standalone app and doesn’t integrate with the inbuilt contact application on iPhone. Which means, it would have to be used instead of using the built-in contact app.
The good thing is it would compel you to take photos of most of your contacts. I know its time consuming, but it would leave you with a lively contact book to browse through whenever you use your iPhone for calling/SMS/e-mail. The application is available on iTunes for $1.99. [iTunes Link]

Now for this app giving the name of Classics is very rhetorical, cause the future of books is This, as this the core thing on iPad. Let me clarify myself here, Someone once said future is very much reading a book from a screen and voilà here it is with Classics. An Ebook store with titles ranging from Alice in wonderland to Pride and Predudice, from Jungle Book to Gulliver’s Travels it’s got a great collection of eBooks. The text is eligible and the turning of pages with a touch of a finger gives it a very neat look, you (more…)

With so much hype and hoopla around the Apple press event and their to be launched products in 2010 (read Apple’s very own tablet and the 4th generation iPhone). Our own Annkur was invited with his crystal bowl by Bloomberg UTV to help with the predictions and clear the air about the future on Apple. Predict he did on the 4th gen iPhones; but I guess we have to wait a little while to see if they come true.
In the meantime, while Annkur is waiting with his fingers crossed, you can go ahead and watch him making those revolutionary predictions (Jump post 1:00).

While we count the days to the upcoming Apple event that would shed some official light (hopefully) on the entire tablet case. A lot of speculation about the technical specification and Apple’s game plan has just emerged (warning: take every bit with a pinch of salt). Strong bets are being placed on a bigger iPhone with a 5″ display and a tablet with 7 – 9″ screen or touchscreen mac.
Apple had acquired chip maker P.A. Semi some time back and it is expected that the technology housed herein would power handhelds some day. Talk of a multicore iPhone with a PA Semi chip is nothing new and it is now being said that the Apple tablet chip is only designed by Apple and Samsung would manufacture the same. Apple is said to be on track to get “the most powerful, lowest-cost (more…)

This seems to be a break up of sorts between two gigantic giants of Silicon Valley. After the latest news of Apple wanting to revolutionize mobile advertising via its acquisition of Quattro, it’s now rumored via Apple’s sources that the company is in talks with Microsoft for a deal that could have Bing replacing Google as default search engine on iPhone OS 4.0. The OS 4.0 is rumored for launch on the Jan 27 “latest creation” event.
Ever since the iPhone launched in Jan ‘07, we saw a close connection between Google and Apple. Firstly Google services like YouTube and Maps were integrated with the Apple iPhone / iPod Touch. Not just that, almost all of Goolgle’s Web Services were optimized specially for the iPhone, including AdSense, Docs, Reader, Google Earth & more.
Things started to get sour back in July last year, when Google announced Chrome OS. It was followed by Apple blocking Google Voice App on its App Store stating that it was “duplicating iPhone’s own functionalities”. Apple even added that Google might do something villainous with user data. Google acknowledged this to the FCC. Apple fumbled and said that it in fact had not actually rejected Google Voice, but was still “pondering” over what to make of the application. It proved that Apple was indeed lieing. (more…)

If you are thinking that I am comparing the original sales that Steve Jobs got with the 3GS launch in 2009, you are wrong mister. Vodafone just got the rights to sell the 3GS in UK and this coincides with the Nexus One Global rollout by Google. So whats the figures like?
Google Nexus One: 20000 units globally in first week
3GS by Vodafone UK: 50000 units on opening day

Apple has proudly sold 3 billion apps on the iPhone platform. But the pirated apps market is booming and estimations suggest that it has dented Apple’s revenues considerably. Had the pirated apps been purchased legally by Apple; app developers would have got an additional $450 million in revenues. For Apple alone ,considering that they charge 30% of app revenue as commission the amount of loss comes close to $140 million.
While some smart developers like Ben did fight pirated apps in a very innovative manner, Apple has largely remained silent about the issue. Though even Apple has tried its best to get Jailbreaking labeled as illegal. Hackers in any platform would also prevail, its just that Apple has to ensure that these Hackers do not take too much away from the developers by means of piracy. App Store being a key iPhone USP the issue is delicate for sure. (more…)

We are really going crazy trying to keep a track of all the crazy rumors, leaks and predictions about the Apple tablet and the 4th Generation iPhone. As soon as I write a post about the possibility of the iPhone 4G coming in May instead of June/July and the very next moment I see another rumor of an April launch doing the rounds. While the tech world is digesting all the latest release at CES 2010 the Apple rumors had become a daily affair.

Apple tablet rumors have a long history, we have seen numerous patents that suggest a tablet computer from Apple and at the same time those mysterious industry sources have been inputting the media with a different specification each day. Some suggest a 7″ screen while others believe that the tablet would be a 10.1″ display and a few smart analysts predict both to come true. Personally, as far as I know Apple, you will see only one size for the tablet and that too if the tablet is really released. Wild leaks have suggested a projector inbuilt the Apple tablet, now such rumors drives us crazy and at the same time excites us at the possibility of the Apple tablet.
The iPhone 4G is much more real, as (more…)

Its 3 years since we saw the first glimpse of the Apple smartphone and over the past 2.5 yrs it has changed the face of the mobile industry. The iPhone in no time has managed to top the charts and become one of the biggest money churners for Apple. This is to such an extent that iPhone now makes more money for Apple than what Nokia the biggest manufacturer of cellphones in the world earns.
So its natural for us to compare any new smatphone with the iPhone and its a fact that many of them came up after the iPhone with a similar design. Is that a right approach? While I still believe that comparing phones of different form factors is not exactly the right thing to do, the fact remains that the innovation on the iPhone is not just about the form but lot more. The UI, multi touch support since inception, amazing web integration and the App Store to name a few. These things are independent of the form factor and I won’t be surprised if we shall see something which is not a full touchscreen (i.e. sans keyboard) like the iPhone succeed beyond the heights that Apple has touched in this market.
One thing that makes me love the Palm Pre is the amazing integration of a (more…)

For those who you who restrained themselves from buying an iPhone for not having a physical keyboard, here is a solution. But how effective is this solution? or is it worth? You decide.
ION have introduced this detachable QWERTY keyboard for iPhone. Dubbed iType, the keyboard has a slot where the iPhone can be docked and then the phone is ready to accept the text input. Simple? Well, its not as simple as it sounds. The catch here is that iPhone OS does not take text inputs from an external device. The solution from ION is a companion application that accepts the text input. This text can then be pushed to mail or can be copied to clipboard for use later.
As of now, there is no official price tag on on the device. But MobileCrunch reports that it would be costing $100. We suggest you take a look at the BTstack Keyboard and BTstack mouse that lets you connect your existing wireless keyboard and mouse to the iPhone, that too Free!

Apple might be on for a better quarter than what most analysts are predicting. The latest we heard is that the iPhone is on track to sell 11 million units in quarter ending Dec 2009. This is certainly huge given the yearly target that Steve Jobs himself set for the iPhone in 2007 was 10 million. 11 million this quarter would mean either the iPhone would be ahead of RIM’s Blackberry in sales or just neck and neck with them. But an interesting observation is seen in how the iPod touch is performing this holiday season.
Apparently the iPod touch saw a huge spike in app downloads activity on Christmas day. According to Flurry (mobile application analytics for mobile application developers across iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Java ME) the iPod touch saw a 1000% spike in app downloads on Christmas day and it happened to be the first day its activity surpassed the iPhone. This clearly shows that the iPod touch was gifted more than the iPhone (obvious). With the iPhone sales figure shooting as high as 11 million, you might well be surprised by a super-hit performance score by the iPod touch aswell. All eyes on the Apple earnings call and the rumored January 26th event!

Multiple rumors about unannounced, unseen and much desired Apple products is something we are used to. Right from the iPhone Nano last year to the multiple iPhone’s that we should have seen in 2009, there is plenty behind us already. But here is a interesting duo that is making news today. The iPhone 4th Generation and the rumored Apple Tablet. While we can be certain that the iPhone 4th Gen is surely in works, the tablet is something completely driven by rumors (since months/years).
Boy genius report today claimed that it has some concrete source telling that Apple is gearing up for a Tablet announcement in January 2010 and the device is confirmed to be sporting a 7″ display. This to an extent discards the earlier rumors of a 9.7″ screen on the Apple Tablet. This is backed by rumors that Apple has requested some premium app developers to present a full screen version of their apps, which currently run on 320×480 (more…)
