Facebook app for Zune HD goes live

March 2nd, 2010

If there is one winner that Microsoft has rolled out in the handheld space, its the Zune HD. Going live against the iPod touch 3G last year, the Zune HD did do a fair enough job. The design & UI were impressive and multitouch came in just on time. Now there is one social networking player who has leveraged the smartphone boom to its advantage pretty well and thats Facebook. Right form the impressive iPhone app to the Palm WebOS, they have taken the trouble to optimize FB for mobile more than anyone else. And it comes as little surprise to us that they have now gone live with the Facebook app on Zune HD. Zune HD users, do let us know whats your opinion on the same!

ContactFlow : Snapshot browsing contact application for iPhone

February 8th, 2010

ContactFlow may be new for App Store but was available previously for jailbreaked iPhones. The application allows iPhone users to browse through their contacts in a cover flow style. Its similar to browsing albums on an iPod.

While flipping through the contacts, the user needs to tap on a particular contact to flip the picture for calling options. The options involve calling, SMS and e-mail. The application is a standalone app and doesn’t integrate with the inbuilt contact application on iPhone. Which means, it would have to be used instead of using the built-in contact app.

The good thing is it would compel you to take photos of most of your contacts. I know its time consuming, but it would leave you with a lively contact book to browse through whenever you use your iPhone for calling/SMS/e-mail. The application is available on iTunes for $1.99. [iTunes Link]

Classics iPhone app inspires iBooks on the iPad (AppStore Free)

February 6th, 2010

Now for this app giving the name of Classics is very rhetorical, cause the future of books is This, as this the core thing on iPad. Let me clarify myself here, Someone once said future is very much reading a book from a screen and voilà here it is with Classics. An Ebook store with titles ranging from Alice in wonderland to Pride and Predudice, from Jungle Book to Gulliver’s Travels it’s got a great collection of eBooks. The text is eligible and the turning of pages with a touch of a finger gives it a very neat look, you (more…)

Mobile 4 Mumbai is a mobile application developed by Raxit Sheth to assist almost anyone planning to use BEST buses throughout Mumbai City. This application can be installed on any cellphone or device supporting JAVA (.jar installations).

BEST operates one of India’s largest fleets of buses in Mumbai, according to the stats from 2008, BEST runs a total of 3,480 buses, transporting 4.5 million passengers over 365 routes. Targeted towards people travelling by bus this app makes it simple to locate bus nos operating between any given source-destination. This app can potentially benefit Mumbaikars as well as anyone visiting Mumbai.

The application is still in beta mode and has been made available for public download at http://www.m4mum.com/. We tested this on a Nokia E63 and were impressed with the app functioning, but this might require a more comprehensive list of bus routes to be added before we are ready for primetime. App wars: More Android stores in the making?

December 28th, 2009

Till now, Google’s Android Market and Motorola’s SHOP4APPS are the two Android stores known with Android Market already live and SHOP4APPS still in testing. Apparently, rumors of two new android stores are making news. The rumor has it that Sony Ericsson and General Mobile are developing their own android stores.

Sony Ericsson recently announced that they would be accepting application from developers to be sold on PlayNow for their upcoming Xperia X10. General Mobile is also working on their own android application store, dubbed Storeoid. With Andoid Market going 20k strong and support from three more Android application stores, the Andoid OS would hope to stand against the Apple app store, however I feel that fragmenting the distribution isn’t helping them for sure. One key advantage Apple has is simplicity and one single point for all apps & media – iTunes!

Android Market 20000 strong! missing the big hits?

December 16th, 2009

android apps

Though unofficial but the news is that the Android Market is 20000 strong with over 60% free apps to offer. While this may seem minuscule compared to the 100,000+ apps on the iTunes app store, the face that there were 9 Android handsets released this year and another 50 expected next year, this could well be the beginning of the Android revolution. The Droid and the Nexus One has already given Android a significant mindshare over the iPhone 3GS, however the biggest challenge for any iPhone competitor including the Palm Pre is the App store (I hate pointing that again and again). With such growth of Android apps we might well see things changing in 2010.

The only thing that Android apps are missing probably is the big hits like we have seen with the App Store. For example the TomTom navigation app that till recently sold for over $100 for the iPhone managed to get 80,000 purchases in Q3 2009. This brought the co. $8 million in revenue. Once Android market proves its commercial ability in a comparable manner, we can cheer the 000’s of Android apps with much more confidence!

I tried to blow some candles, ended with a burnt iPhone :(

November 20th, 2009

I was naturally excited about the new Blower App for the iPhone. This thing uses the iPhone speaker to blow out air that as per the app description Blow out candles, Blow herbs away, Refresh your skin during hot summer nights! And seeing the youtube video demonstrating how the app works wasn’t enough for me. So I decided to put this thing to test myself. Here is the result.

Note: I tried this with my 2G iPhone. Will try to do this with a 3G if I get a volunteer :P – Video of this attempt is coming on YouTube shortly below (though the camera memory gave up on me, I have a few seconds to show).
