The much awaited (atleast for me) Nokia E63 (scaled down version of E71) is now available in India. Retailing for less than Rs 15000 this seems to be a good buy. But compared to the expectations of USD 250, I feel the pricing is still a little steep. Courtesy Fine Connections, we managed to have a quick look at the handset and It is pretty impressive. Though a little bigger than the E71, it would be good upgrade from an E61i.
Also confirmed that the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic shall hit the Indian stores by this weekend. The pricing is Approx Rs 19400 which is really impressive. The first batch of Nokia’s in 2009 is looking good. The 5800 faces competition from LG Cookie which is aggressively priced @ Rs 13000 and highly promoted in India. The LG Cookie went on sale last week.

Earlier this year Cuil (pronounced ‘Cool’) was believed to be a Google killer. A new search engine started by some industry veterans and well funded. I was personally amazed to see the amount of PR and buzz it managed to create early on. Though the day it launched we were disappointed (it didn’t index us), the quality was not upto the mark. And eventually, few months down the line it seems to have hit a dead end with no real traffic.
So what really caused this crash? Is Cuil really that bad? Maybe not

Our technology providers Software Alliance is already reporting a significant increase in the prices of Memory cards. The increase has been with all major brands in India including Kingston, Transcend and Sandisk. The reason has been the decreased production by Toshiba, followed by Samsung. MicroSD memory card prices have shot up as much as 50% in just one day according to Digitimes.
The prices might stabilize sometime in february. Having enjoyed the most competitive rates in recent months be prepared to shell out more for those Memorycards and Pendrives.

Sony Ericsson tried its luck with Windows Mobile powered by HTC (as ODM). But it seems they aren’t too pleased with the Xperia. SE has now tied up with Taiwan-based Mobinnova for manufacturing its future Windows Mobile devices. While no official reason is out, we believe it would be cheaper then HTC and HTC being present under its own brand name in the market might have been hurting SE!

Palm isn’t doing great recently with losses mounting on. The old glory has been lost since long and the name Treo only brings a smile to my face as I use my Nokia E61i. All major Treo models today are Windows powered leaving Palm OS lovers disappointed. But die-hard Palm fans like myself still hope for a turnaround.
The new Palm OS NOVA which is in development since long (yes delayed aswell), is expected to show its face to the public at CES next year (Jan 8-11). The new Nova powered devices are said to be with US carriers already and their first impression as per Palm CEO Ed Colligan is positive!

We already saw the fight Nokia is putting up to fight the chinese mobiles. In the last 1-2 year s these handsets have flooded the local markets and ruined the low-end cream that the industry was growing on since the last 5 years.
And here comes the fight from the Indian govt to tackle the unbranded phones without legal IMEI. It is believed that these phones are widely used by terrorists. Earlier the govt had directed the telecos to disconnect mobile handsets on their network without proper IMEI by 6th Jan 2009. However the deadline has now been expanded till 31 March 2009.

So how popular is you YouTube video? Each video does display a views count; but that till now wasn’t enough to tell if your girlfriend is your only fan :P. So here comes a really useful feature from YouTube that tells content owners how many unique visits were received on their videos.
The YouTube Insights page now shows you the option to see the Unique Views (the yellow line in the image). The performance of your content now becomes measurable more conclusively.

Ever since Arun Sarin decided to make a move from Vodafone; we were wondering what next? All he said that he was returning to US and taking a little break. Mr Sarin’s work at Vodafone is history. What he has delivered in tough situations will be remembered for long. And as I read the rumors going around the Silicon valley - I am excited!
Its no news that Yahoo is doing badly and they need something to work for them ASAP. Personally myself and a lot of my colleagues who are Google Fans today started with the same old Yahoo IM (some 7 yrs back or more I guess). In recent times it seems Yahoo has lost its charm. Add to that the recession / poor economic situation in the US, which hammers the situation even more. So will it be Arun Sarin taking command of Yahoo? Can he do it?

Google Earth has been a controversial tool since long. And after the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai; a city based advocate has filed a PIL in the Bombay High Court seeking a complete ban on Google Earth. The plea states that ‘this website (Google earth) aids terrorists in plotting attacks’. Adding fuel to the fire is the statement by a suspected LET terrorist in February this year, that he was shown the maps on India on Google earth.
Programs like Google Earth contravene the National Mapping Policy framed by the Centre in 2005 and the National Security Act, 1980.

Google has updated the image search. The thumbnail that we see along with a frame displaying the webpage now has a search bar on the top. This really saves time for someone like me who opens up many thumbnails in differnet windows/tabs at once and then gets frustrated when he wants to go back and search a new image.

Expected to come in first half of 2009, this is a 3.5″ Touchscreen with a QWERTY - Looks like a addition to the communicator series. More details as it comes…
From the image we can make out some obvious things, the display is a slide up and rolls over the Qwerty. Also the 5 way navigational joystick is on the left now. The front looks is much like the Sony Ericsson Xperia.

Android according to me is the next thing in 2009! It will explode the mobile market (recession plays a spoil sport though). After Motorola, it seems that Sony Ericsson is trying to get its game right with Android. Apparently SE has been having a tough time in the business segment and the days of P910i are long gone.
Though SE has moved to Windows Mobile (made by HTC) with the Xperia; it seems they need to do better than that. So will Sony Ericsson workup some magic with Android?

Nokia today announced the 5800 touchscreen in India along with their music service Ovi. The much awaited touchscreen from Nokia comes as a competition to the iPhone. The pricing is what excited us the most; Rs 21839 only! While the iPhone is backed by the popular iTunes and the Appstore; Nokia still banks majorly on the Symbian OS and mass market approach.
Ovi is the name for Nokia’s “umbrella concept” Internet services. Centered on ovi.com, it will market as “personal dashboard” where users can share photos with friends, buy music and access third-party services like Yahoo’s Flickr photo site.

Youtube now supports widescreen videos. If you are regular at YouTube you will notice that several vidoes in the Favourites section are now WideScreen. Youtube holds its real value in the database but it sure needs to innovate. Probably a step in the right direction - from 4:3 to 16:9. Cheers

Cheap unbranded Chinese handsets are a big hit in India. In a highly competitive mobile market with razor thin margins; most small retailers have either stopped or significantly reduced trading in branded handsets in favor of these Imported ones (also check ebay). These Chinese handset designers are clever and understand their target market very well; Firstly they work on the quantity principle instead of quality and secondly they are priced less than half the Nokia’s and SE’s! Also not to forget some of them copying popular Nokia designs/tunes and also offering WM logos on bootup.

Not thats weird, Apparently motorola doesn’t want its Ultra-Luxurious handset Aura to retail on eBay! Reports suggest that Mototorla might ask Aura buyers to sign a contract that the handset will never appear on eBay. So much to maintain exclusivity? Well I would say, concentrate your efforts on better products instead!

A notebook for INR Rs 10000!! Yes the $200 Asus EEE is expected sometime in 2009. No details on screen size or configuration is available, but I can assure you that its not the Windows 7 powered EEE that we are talking about here.
We expect a Linux powered system, but it is being suggested that this one might well be a 10″ LCD instead of the 7″ or 8.9″ which Asus plans to phase out. Unlikely I would say!
