LG’s CEO (MEA), KW Kim, told Emirates Business: “We will soon launch a new product, maybe by April. It will compete with Apple and Amazon.” LG is not releasing any other information about this ‘new product’. But seeing LG’s keen interest in the new e-reader market and Mr. Kim mentioning Apple and Amazon, its hardy difficult to guess what he’s talking about.
LG is already working on e-ink based displays, and have also recently shown-off their 19″ flexible e-paper display, shown in the above pic. LG also showed a solar-powered e-reader not so long ago. Even though LG might comeup with their own e-reader, would they really be able to compete with Apple’s iPad and Amazon’s Kindle? While Apple and Amazon work closely with the major publishers, would LG be able to develop a publisher partnership that can compete with them? Entering the e-book market with just the hardware is like giving the customers a blank book with a great cover to read. Your move LG.

The rumors of a jumbo Kindle or a large screen Kindle is all over the web. The new large screen Kindle will be an alternative to newspapers and magazines. We believe that this would be Amazon’s attempt to put life in the dying newspaper industry. The Kindle e-book reader has been a grand success for Amazon and the Kindle 2 was recently unveiled for $359.
The rumors came from New York Times (NYT) and it is believed that the large screen Kindle would be in association with NYT. Interestingly NYT and Amazon refused to comment on the rumors.
Amazon has called a press conference on Wednesday. Though the invitation doesn’t say anything about the new Kindle, the news is unofficially official for most of us.

Update: It seems that the new Kindle would be called Amazon Kindle DX. It would feature a 9.7″ screen compared to the 6″ in Kindle 2. A inbuilt PDF reader and discounted rates to subscribe to the New York Times.

As expected Amazon Kindle 2 has been officially announced. The pricing is the same as rumored i.e. $359 and the device is currently available on amazon for pre-order; ships 24th Feb onwards. Kindle 2 lacks Wi-Fi though and works on the Sprint network. A interesting debate is one whether Kindle would stand alone with most consumers preferring single mobile devices that can take care of all their portable needs.
