Do we need a 1280×1024 mobile?

February 10th, 2010

I just came across this really sexy and sleek Qisda mobile that would launch sometime soon. On the specs front this promises 1280×768 resolution on a 4″ touchscreen. Thats even higher than the 854×480 we saw on the Motorola Droid. And I am just wondering if we are ready for this?

Over the past 2 years the smartphone market has grown beyond belief. From a point where we used to talk about camera in a phone as a giant leap, we have moved on to OLED displays (AMOLED aswell), operating systems smart enough to be ported on netbooks, cameras that are killing the basic digicams and now the 1.5GHz processor (heck my first P4 PC was less powerful than that). Going hands on with the Acer Liquid last week was one of those moments when I couldn’t stop appreciating the progress mobile technology has made – full HD video in your palm! While its true that we would see ourselves do some real high performance computing on the mobile and a major chunk of our work would be doable on the mobile (in many ways, it already is!) – I am pushed back by the idea of mobile technology growing so fast or rather in the manner we are thinking of these mobiles.

Some basic fundamental queries in my mind remains unanswered even after reading a whole lot of thoughts from across the globe on this subject. Do we need mobiles that can replace our desktops / notebooks? Would you ever keep a smartphone on your desk and work all day at your office?

You may call me old fashioned but (more…)

Google voice-based search for mobile users comes to India

July 20th, 2009

google

Just say it and your mobile would search it. Search giant Google has launched a voice based search for mobile (earlier seen on iPhone, and the Yahoo app for iPhone). Which means that you no longer have to click on search button but just talk to your phone and have your search results displayed.

Targeting the mobile users, Google believes their numbers have crossed the number of computer users. “Mobiles (more than 400 million) outnumber the personal computers (PCs — slightly over 30 million) concentration in India. A big part of the population accessing internet going ahead would do so on a mobile handset and so we need to offer enriching experience to these users,” says Google India Head of products Vinay Goel.

With the GPRS rates going down and easy availability of internet users on mobile, Google believes that the search and social networking on mobile would be larger than that of computer users.

The voice-based search is currently (more…)

Mobile Effect – Minute by Minute update kids!

February 26th, 2009

kids-culture

Kids addicted to their Mobile Phones is a common disease today! I can see it all around me. Texting as if its an IM; Phone calls as if its breath. I feel blessed that my generation had those communication barriers, it allowed us so much time for our selves. That wait for a friend who is on his way to visit me, that importance of a get together, the feeling of seeing people face to face and not chatting/talking over a network…

The cellphone has certainly tampered with teen culture. And this change certainly comes with a turbulence. Children getting their hands on a cellphone @ Age of 8 is certainly now an encouraging figure. Kids are stuck to their cellphones like honeybees. Over a family dinner but a outgoing message every 30secs. In a college lecture but still connected via SMS to a dozen people (often in the same class), left alone for a min and there they go on a call… (Remember the Spanish kids sent to mental institute to get rid of cellphone addiction?)

Recession: Nokia cuts production

February 12th, 2009

bpl-bill

No this news doesn’t make me feel any better but I really hope my service provider considers my good track record to grant me some more credit :P

While the world crossed 4 billion cellphone connections this week the recession is sinking in. Forcing layoffs and production cuts. Nokia has officially announced that its Salo plant in Finland would see a slowdown that will affect all its 2500 workers. It is expected that 20 -30% of Nokia’s workforce there would be idle at any point of time.

Analysts expect handset market volumes to fall some 18 percent in the January-March quarter, while Nokia is expected to report its weakest quarterly earnings in more than seven years, a Reuters poll showed on Wednesday.

Underwear to fend off cellphone radiation?

May 21st, 2007

According to Textually.org, Swiss clothing manufacturer Isabodywear is launching a special line of mens underwear that claims to protect mens sperm from harmful cell phone radiation?.
The briefs are purportedly constructed with threads made of silver, which the company claims will fend off harmful cellphone radiation; moreover, in an effort to really prove just how effective these undergarments are, it suggests that phone calls originated within the confines of your new underwear simply won’t connect.

Reportedly, 4,000 pairs have been created so far, and for folks willing to give these a try and fill out a survey, the first 500 of you to email in and request one will seemingly have one sent out gratis. There’s no word on when you can expect the Slipways to hit the market, but they should sell for CHF29.90 ($24) apiece when retailers start stocking.
