Asus EEE PC heats competition amongst portables …

June 4th, 2008

EEE Competitors
Asus EEE is a little wonder, and at that price its a thunder! In recent days we came across multiple reports of Ultraportables from Dell, Sony, and others. And every time a budget portable is being discussed the name “EEE” crops in. Asus has certainly taken a head start in this segment and in the coming days we shall witness some really kewl Low Budget Ultraportable Notebooks! Here are a few…
Any touch device today becomes a direct competitor to the iPhone, and here when it comes to portable notebooks any new release is considered a “EEE Killer or a EEE Competitor”.

Sony Via based EEE Notebook

Sony Via Based Ultra-portable:

The OpenBook reference design is developed by Via to help system makers that want to use the company’s C7-M processor. Sony’s Via based budget notebook is really small at 8.9″. And quite a lot of specs has leaked onto the web…

  • Via 1.6 GHz C7-M CPU + VX800 chipset
  • 8.9-inch LCD
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • 60GB hard disk + 1GB RAM
  • 3 USB ports
  • 4-in-1 card reader
  • Windows Vista Home Basic
  • 240 x 175 x 36.2mm and 1Kg
Acer aspire Spy one

Acer Aspire One:

The Aspire One is rumored to be a 8.9″ Ultra Portable. Although the leaked spy shot above doesn’t appear to feature Windows the Win key on the keyboard makes me happy! This one is said to be running on Intel Atom.

Dell Mini Inspiron:

Another sub 500$ ultra-portable coming up from DELL. Will offer Windows XP or Ubuntu Linux, also features ‘8 in 1′ card reader, inbuilt webcam, wireless connectivity (wifi+bluetooth?) and dedicated media buttons! (btw the name Mini-Inspiron isn’t official yet!).

Asus Eee PC Redefining Ultraportable Notebooks!

May 25th, 2008

Asus EEE PC
For quite some time before its launch the Asus Eee PC had tech types buzzing with anticipation. Unlike the other Intel Classmate and other such products which were aimed at educational needs of the children, Asus Eee PC was for sale directly to the public and with better specs. So its Easy to Learn, Easy to Work and  Easy to Play.

Asus Eee PC has 2 series of releases, the first one being the 700 series which if as small as 7″ (lcd) and the newer version 900 series which has a 8.9″ screen. Eee PC has a low-end Intel mobile CPU supported by 4GB-8GB of Solid State Disks (SSD). With its amazingly compact design and a affordable pricing EEE PC certainly has become one of the most talked about notebooks in recent months.
All Eee PC releases weight under 1Kg, targeting the ultra portable category. Asus EEE 700 measures 8.8 by 6.5 inches by little less than inch in thickness making it easy to fit and comfortable for transportation. The typical ASUS design and the looks make the Asus Eee PC from looking cheap and tidy. The tiny touchpad looks and feels great to use. It has only one mouse button which is good. Tap on the left side of the mouse for left mouse click and similarly on the other side. The Asus Eee PC 900 has a 1.3MP webcam above the screen and speakers on the either side of the screen. The only thing you would probably miss is an optical drive :(

What has been encouraging is that ASUS has realised the potential of EEE PC and after the initial 7″ version we saw the 8.9″ and also a confirmation for the 10″ EEE PC. All this is powered with a decent battery life of around 2-3.5 hours. Well so if you want a portable which wont burn a hole in your pocket and would still let you do all the basic office work on the move -EEE is for you!

Rumors around the industry is that EEE PC would also feature as a UMPC / Tablet, while the desktop version has already been exposed. No matter what, I always hoped for a Laptop with such a portability. Though the EEE comes with Linux OS, It is capable of running a Windows OS. Personally I love the desktop for gaming and heavy usage, but when on the move, believe me carrying a conventional laptop is not easy (and not many of us can afford a Macbook Air). So EEE PC 900 might well be my next portable PC.
