OG Review: Sony Ericsson MW600, bluetooth headset with FM

Well we happen to be one of the lucky souls to get a hands-on with the Sony Ericsson MW600 bluetooth headset. The MW600 is loaded with features with a OLED display, stereo (3.5mm jack), music controls, volume controls, multipoint bluetooth, FM and more. The music quality  (testing on our SE W595) is good and if not the best we have ever witnessed on a bluetooth headset. MW600 also connected without any issues to our iMac and the range of the bluetooth connectivity was enough for us to visit our neighbors and comeback without any disruption in playback.

MW600 is roughly as big as a pencil cell and the music ( << >ll >>), power are rugged rubber material whereas the call button that sticks at the bottom of the OLED display is a little glossy and goes well with the shiny screen. At one end you have the power button & the micro-usb charger port whereas on the other end you have the call button, mic and the 3.5mm audio jack. On both sides of the OLED display you have controls, with one side featuring the cool touch sensitive volume scroll (yeah we missed it in the HBH-IS800) and the other side has the music keys. The volume scroll on the side  even helps in navigation when required. The design / feature set has certainly evolved from the DS220. The multiple attachments with the earplugs (i.e. different sized earbuds) ensures that you get the best fit in your ears (thats one good habit of SE, which has retained over the years).

Being able to connect a external speaker via the 3.5mm audio jack and inbuilt FM in the bluetooth headset makes this a real multipurpose bluetooth headset. Something you will find yourself using very frequently in a day and not just when driving out.  Well, that doesn’t mean that the MW600 doesn’t do calls, it actually makes your handset only a data communicator with caller ID showing up on your bluetooth device itself. Even when using a bluetooth headset, removing the phone from the pocket to see who the caller is, is a frustrating experience (specially for a biker like me). Speaking about bikers, this is one of the few bluetooth headsets that would slip into your helmet without any discomfort and that won’t affect the reception one bit. The only thing that I can expect to be improved here is the quality or rather firmness of the clip. It doesn’t fall off but is pretty loose and even a small hit would knock it off the fabric it attaches to. Rest this thing works like a charm. Even without a manual I was able to get through all the functionality in no time.

We were able to connect the MW600 with the Nokia 6303, E63, iPhone 2G (for calls, stereo) and of-course the auto-pair with the W595 (non Sony Ericsson devices need to use the code ‘0000’ to pair with the MW-600). The battery life looks good (I will need to test a little longer to post figures, will update).

  • Just bought this stuff yesterday. Not a fan of bluetooth audio cause quality degrades, but this one lives upto its reviews. Though not A grade audiophile quality…but nothing that would irritate me either. Best…displays the caller name as stored in your phone on the OLED screen…a boon while bike riding!!!!

  • This is by far the best most affordable Stereo Bluetooth headset out there. I myself am a huge SE fan when it comes to their music phones or music headsets and this wasnt a letdown at all. Its range is much better than previous SE headsets like the HBH-DS970 and signal can easily travel thru closed doors and from behind ones back if cliped on the front. sound quality and battery life are superb and radio works very well, except when u try to auto tune it, it stops on the slightest signal it gets even if its distorted interferrence which can be very annoying. another flaw i noticed was at times there is some fine crackles and pops which come during music play. Im not sure if this is due to the headset or the phone, currently using a Nokia e72, which i was afraid it might not work with because old stereobluetooth headsets dont always work with the newer software phones, but since the MW600 is brand new, itpretty much will pair with anything id imagine.
Another slight prob with this is there is no proper driver for this headset for windows7 at the moment due to which when trying to connect, very often the computer crashes, which is not good at all, again im no tech geek so maybe its the computer or bt dongle im using but anyway, all in all very great headset definately advise.

One more thing, ppl should know to take the best advantage of this headset, it should be paired to a SE phone, it will show the tracks playing and also the cli wil show names of ppl calling rather than just the number like it will with any other branded phone…

  • You know what is the biggest joke? It is not compatible with the X10.
I bought it just yesterday to pair with my Xperia X10, but:
    1) Song details are not displayed at all.
    2) Only the phone number shows, not the contact details.

Utter rubbish! Should have just went with 3rd party products that cost much less.

    • It isn’t just the X10 it isn’t fully compatible with. I have one of these and had read that Track ID and Caller ID were not supported on the X10, even with Android 2.1. The SE website also says this, however I’ve researched this and it isn’t to do with SE but, rather Android. I also tested it on my partner’s HTC Wildfire and same. It’s to do with Android, so blame Google for that, not SE.

  • hie ..i’m using SE VIVAZ PRO and looking to purchase a bluetooth headset… so guys….any recommendation?

  • my MW600 bluetooth headset cannot connect / pair with my nokia 5630. What happen to the “Universal Compatibility – Compatible with any bluetooth enabled phone”? what should i do? please help!
