The e-book revolution has taken another step away from e-readers (of the hardware type). Just as Amazon has made its Kindle software available for reading books on platforms other than its e-book reader of the same name and Barnes and Noble came out with a Nook app, Sony has released its Sony Reader app enabling more people to access e-books on its store easily.Sony Reader has been released for Android devices running on version 2.2 and above – which is a bit ironical, considering that no Sony Ericsson phone at the moment runs the OS, but that’s another story.
The app will allow readers to buy, and download books in ePub and PDF formats, create bookmarks, do text highlighting and change font size. It comes with three full books and several excerpts helping you begin reading right away. An iPhone version of the app is awaited to be released soon (see the screenshot). The Reader app is currently available for free download in the Android Market, although it does not seem to have arrived in the Indian version of the Market yet (we checked).
We will be downloading it and giving a fair try as well as comparing it with the Kindle app the moment we get it. Watch this space.
