Samsung’s original Galaxy S was notorious for its rather jittery GPS performance. The successor to that phone seems to have fixed that issue by implementing a better GPS chip inside. Folks over at Engadget who had got hold of a review unit of the Galaxy S II checked out its GPS performance by doining an impromptu test outside and were left spellbound by the GPS lock speed they observed.
Well these guys doesn’t seem to know (or have rather forgotten) about a two year old Symbian phone called the Omnia HD which has consistently impressed me with its GPS performance since late 2009. Don’t believe me? Check this video shot by me earlier this year inside a train.
I do not want this post to open yet another Android vs Symbian debate here – but it is sad to see such an amazing device, well ahead of its time go down the drain because of the OS. Having been used to almost immediate GPS lock, the Galaxy S II’s impressive GPS performance doesn’t look THAT impressive to me at all.
It sure feels awesome to get an almost immediate satellite lock – but hell, I have been used to it for well over two years now! 🙂
