Looks like the wait to get your hands on the cheapest Android tablet has just been lengthened by a month. The company which makes the Aakash tablet for the Government of India, Datawind has confirmed that there would be some delays in the launch of the product.
The good thing about this delay is that users would be able to get hold of a model that would get a significant upgrade in terms of processor speed and the Operating system. While the originally announced model ran at a leisurely 366 MHz, the upgraded model would run at a much faster 700 MHz. The software too would see an updated version of Android 2.2 running on the device. The RAM and the amount of internal memory though remains the same at 256 MB and 2GB respectively.
The tablet was supposed to have been made available by November but there seems to be manufacturing issues and more importantly this update that has led to this delay.
Anyway, we hope Datawind would be able to adhere to its own timeframe of January 2012 to launch the Aakash in India. The company would also be venturing in to larger screened tablets with more features and capacitive displays in the near future. They have also confirmed that they have no intention to compete with premium tablet makers while adding that Datawind is looking to consolidate their presence in the sub 10k price bracket which according to them is a reasonable price range at which most Indians would not mind spending on a tablet.
