Acer, the world’s largest Notebook PC maker has taken covers off its first Ultrabook notebook, the S3 at the ongoing IFA Conference at Berlin. The device, aiming to be a portable, powerful notebook (like most other ultrabooks out there) has the likes of the MacBook Air and the ultrathin Toshiba Protégé Z830 in sight with this one being thinner than both of these adversaries.
Let’s dive deep in to the most fascinating details now. The S3 gets a lightweight magnesium/alloy chassis as well as a metal finish that is claimed to be fingerprint free. At just 13mm thin, this one is slightly slimmer than even the famed MacBook Air as well the Protégé Z830.
Tipping the scales at 1.4kg, the notebook should be a breeze to carry around as well. As for the screen, we have a 13.3 inch 1366*768 (that’s slightly over 720p resolution) LED backlit display that is apt for a notebook this size. Users will have the option to choose laptops powered by Intel’s second generation Core i3/i5/i7 processors for full-fledged desktop like performance in a pint sized package. The device offers customers an option to select a 240 GB SSD or a 320 or 500 GB hard disk for storage purposes.
The notebook also gets Acer’s GreenInstantOn technology that lets users put the laptop to sleep mode at the flick of a button and promises a battery backup in that state for up to 60 days! Apart from this, it also gets an “Instant I” button that brings the laptop to full functionality in just 1.5 seconds. If the sleep is any deeper, it takes all of 6 seconds for the device to be fully operational. Another attractive feature is the Instant Connect feature that lets users go online in under 2.5 seconds after comeback from any sleep mode. The battery on the device is suitable for 7 hours of normal usage.
Connectivity options on the S3 include almost everything you can think of – including Wi-Fi b/g/n connectivity, Bluetooth 4.0, card reader, full-fledged HDMI port and of course, the standard array of USB ports. There is an integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam for video conferencing and chat junkies The notebook gets a full size Chiclet keyboard which should make typing quite comfortable on the device.
The Aspire S3 Ultrabook would go on sale across the globe starting later this month. The price of the base version stats at $799 , which is cheaper than an entry level MacBook Air.
