Airtel has issued a press release stating that they have started offering cellular connectivity in the Kargil sector of Jammu & Kashmir – an area where no other private cellular operators have their services. Airtel adds that while the government has made efforts to improve the infrastructure of the region, the geographical conditions of the area has prevented the advent of a robust communications infrastructure there.
Airtel aims to prevent the communications blockage that happens in the area during winters – due to which the area gets isolated from the rest of the country.
In the press release, Airtel adds, “Given the extreme weather conditions and rough terrains, the connectivity has been extended to the region through VSAT links and specially designed telecom infrastructure which can be adjusted as per the need in case of any unprecedented weather condition. With connectivity in Kargil, Airtel has covered the farthest destination on the network coverage map of J&K.”
With its service being made available in Kargil too. Airtel claims to have its network in place across all 22 districts of J&K . The only other player to provide cellular access in the region is the state owned provider – BSNL.
