When we had talked about Binatone’s releasing a range of smartphones, tablets and netbooks yesterday, we had speculated that the company might be pricing its tablets in the Rs 10,000-Rs 12,000 range, to make a splash in the as yet unaddressed budget segment of the Indian tablet market. Were we wrong! According to a newsflash from Cellpassion, we now know that the 8 inch HomeSurf tablet, which Binatone had compared to the iPad in its presentation, will retail at as low as Rs 9,000.
There will be those who will be picky and point out that the device has a resistive display and an outdated version of Android, but we must admit to being impressed by the price. Android 1.6 might be old for geeks, but is good enough to provide a decent experience to the tablet newbie. More importantly, it makes tablets that much more accessible to the mainstream, which can only be good. We are trying to get our hands on a unit – watch this space for a hands-on/review.
