We have had a number of low cost cellphones hitting the Indian market of late, offering stacks of features at relatively low prices. The tablet market has, however, remained relatively niche. That might be about to change if a mail we have got from Binatone is any indication. The company, which was known for making televisions in the nineties, is back in India with phones, notebooks and tablets on the Android platform and from what we can see is fighting on price, although we do not have specific prices yet. We have to credit them with courage, though – one of the slides in their presentation mailed to us showed a Binatone HomeSurf tablet being compared with an iPad while another had its specs compared with the iPad and some Archos tablets. Considering that they have resistive screens and run the rather archaic Android 1.6, that definitely takes some nerve and doing. We have the tech specs of the tablets and have asked for review units and most importantly, the price (we really think that anything close to Rs 10-12,000 would make these very interesting). Watch this space.
