Here’s some good news coming your way if you happen to be an ardent fan of Google’s previous Android version – the 4.0 Icecream Sandwich. The OS, which was released a year ago was plagued with implementation issues initially. This led to poor rates of adoption which even after a year is still under 50 percent. An overwhelming majority of Android devices still run on the three generation old version – Gingerbread.
Anyway, as time passes, the dominance of Gingerbread seems to be fast waning as made obvious by fresh data coming from Google themselves. Fresh data compiled from the last week of October makes it clear that as of now, over 25.8% of all devices visiting the Google Play Store run Android 4.0. Gingerbread still retains its dominant position with 54.2% of all devices visting the Play Store running this old version of Android.
It is also interesting to see that an even older version – Froyo (short for frozen yogurt) still manages to hold on to the third position with 12% of devices still running it.
The recently released version of Android, the 4.1 Jelly Bean is hardly a blip on the radar as of now with just 2.7% of the market. However, it seems that the growth of Jelly Bean is much faster than that of ots predecessor.
With Google all set to come up with Android 4.2 next montn with the Nexus 4, it would be interesting to see if the growth of ICS continues its upward trend as it would immediately turn two generations old soon after.
