In what sounds to be great news for Nokia, research firm IDC has said that Android and Windows Phone would lead the smartphone OS pack in the not too distant future. The number of smartphone expected to ship in 2011 would cross 450 million. Android will; of course lead the way with it expected to garner 0ver 39% of the smartphones shipments. Symbian would be still around with 20.9 – reminder of how powerful the platform once used to be. iOS would be lying at around 15%. The rest of the top 5 would be rounded off by BlackBerry and Windows Phone.
The interesting bit is IDC’s prediction for 2015 where it expects Android to still rule the roost. It will garner around 45% of the total smartphones share. Number two is expected to be Windows Phone with a nice 20.9 % share. iOS on the other hand will remain at 15% while BlackBerry would be still around 13.7 percent. The reason behind IDC’s expectation for Windows Phone’s growth would be due to the adoption of that platform by Nokia.
The company as you are already aware has confirmed that Windows Phone would be its primary smartphone platform starting 2011.
