The new Route 66 Maps + Navigation app would be the first to bring Augmented Reality GPS Navigation. The app was showcased at MWC 2011 and would soon be released for Android.
The AR technology uses your device’s camera and projects a 3D car model over the video feed which one can simply follow insted of checking the map. Its AR car model is actually seen taking the turns ahead of you so that you don’t miss your turns in case there are a lot of exits. The app smartly calls this mode as ‘Follow Me’.
Although it sounds like it would make GPS navigation simpler, it does bring in the risk of hazards from loosing concentration from the road or confusing the real view for AR and vice versa. According to its official website, the app is “coming soon” to Android Market and is compatible with any device running Android 2.1 or higher. The app would be available for a 30 day trial period. Check the video below to see the app in action.
