The US State of Nevada has probably become the first government entity in the world to legalize cars that travel.. well driver less. The legislators of the state have passed a bill that will ensure that Cars that integrate a fully automated driving system which negates the need of an actual driver can now freely roam the state without the passengers having to worry about being ‘caught”.
The reason for the approval seems to have been relentless pressure by Google who has been testing out automated versions of the Toyota Prius and the Audi TT in the state.
This move will automatically legalize all these test vehicles which criss cross the state. Now if you are wondering what Google has to do with automated cars, well let me just give you a hint; Navigation. Google is a now a top player in the navigation and maps sector and it only makes sense for Google to work on something that has potential. In a few years from now, there might be “Google Maps” powered automated cars which will take you to your destination of your choice safely, all at the press of a few buttons.
Automated driving coupled with navigation could go a long way in making our streets safer as these computerized systems are far better at making quick decisions than us mere mortals.
The day your car might “run” Android might not be very far it seems!
