We start our CES 2012 coverage with an unlikely gadget –a baby weighing scale. That’s right. A baby scale. But this one’s a different breed compared to your normal baby scale. For starters, this one is connected to the Internet. The scale, manufactured by Withings comes with a host of connectivity options including WiFi, Bluetooth and Bluetooth Smart (Bluetooth Low Energy) connectivity.
The gadget makes the mundane task of keeping track of your baby’s weight gain as he/she grows a tad more exciting. The company calls it the next evolution in home baby and toddler weight tracking. And boy! Do we agree with that statement!
Now, if you think this is just a fancy gadget which would mostly be bought by rich parents who have lots of spare cash to spend on their toddlers, wait till you hear what this thing is capable of doing.
The scale is capable of relaying the weight readings to any connected device in its vicinity – or to any remote computer connected to it in case you wish to use the Internet. The connected device could be a normal PC, an iPad, an iPhone or an iPod Touch. Looks like Android devices are not supported as of now. We hope that changes soon! Withings has developed apps that could be installed on these devices allowing users to keep a tab on the growth of their child.
Parents can also use this App to share information about the child’s growth to their pediatrician all at the press of a button. There are some social features too within the App wherein it allows you to instantly update Facebook, Twitter with new readings as the baby grows. If that wasn’t all, you can also add notes and photos to weight charts which you can preserve as a memory. Cool eh?
The Withings Smart Baby Scale would be made available by Q2, 2012. The price of the device has not been revealed yet.
