Cut crime by cutting 30 million mobile connections: Mexico

In an unprecedented and also deperate (I must say) bid to control crime; Mexico will be implementing this extreme step by the end of this week. As per a new law pressed into legislation recently, all the mobile users have to send their personal contact details as a text message to their service providers.

The deadline is this Saturday post which all those who have not abided will be greeted with disconnected lines. This is to control or rather curb the crimes committed using cell phones. The largest service provider of Mexico i.e. America Movil owned by world-famous billionaire Carlos Slim currently supports the bid, while arch rivals Telefonica has stated that they will not disconnect any lines as the ability to text and call is the basic right of any individual. But I do not see any harm in users sending their details to the service providers though.

  • what i meant was… do you have any details on how they are ensuring the SMS’s coming in have correct details? 🙂

  • Well nothing has been mentioned in the reports; though I would say its not difficult to imagine that the same might be confirmed via submission of some kind of standard documents.
