We surely expect smartphones to outsell the featurephones in the near future, but we surely didnt imagine that it would happen so soon. As per a new report from IDC smartphones have outsmarted the feature phones in terms of shipments. According to the report from IDC which reveals number specifics to Europe only, states that only 20.4 million units were shipped as compared to 21.8 million smart phones, marking the first time when smartphones have outshipped feature phones.
The sales of the feature phones have dipped by around 29 percent compared to Q2 in 2010, whereas the smartphones have seen an increase of 49 percent in the same duration an indication of a future wherein the smartphones will be synonymous with all. Though interestingly the smartphones have seen a 3% decline in total sales and have come down to 52% from last years’ 55%, which Francisco Jeronimo of IDC fathoms to be a primary result of Nokia’s declining market shares which currently at a whopping -44%. And obviously Europe’s economic instability in the recent months also has a thing or two to do with the decline in sales.
Other interesting reading of the statistics is that the Android OS outsells the iOS and seen a very impressive growth of 352% year to year in shipments. Also of note is the fact that Samsung is the leading manufacturer in Europe and leads with a marketshare of 33% in Europe.
