At long last the folks at Square Enix have announced the sequel to the six million copy selling Final Fantasy XIII RPG. And in terms of lame gaming nomenclature, this has got to take first prize. No, it is not called Final Fantasy XIV, but in what seems to be a blatant attempt to eke out every bit of goodwill from the runaway hit that the previous game was, this one will be called Final Fantasy XIII-2. The game will be available for the PS3 and the Xbox 360 and is expected next winter (read “somewhere near the holiday season,” please).
No details about the game are available as yet apart from routine tech PR spiel such as “a brand-new story which stems from the previous title as well as a battle system which has evolved further since “XIII” – and more.” Honestly we expected more from a forthcoming title in a series that has sold more than 95 million units since it first got underway in 1987. All we can honestly say is that the game is likely to be a lot better than its name – the screenshot sure looks impressive.
