Gingerbread To Be Android 2.3?

With Android 2.2 still in the process of being infused in to Android phones all over the world, the tech world is now rife with rumors and speculations regarding the next iteration of Android.

While we all knew that the next iteration has been codenamed Gingerbread, what is not known is the version number that it would end up being called. It is not easy predicting the version number for Android which in the past, has jumped from version 1.6 (Donut) to version 2.1 (Eclair) and then to Android 2.2 (Froyo). While Gingerbread has been termed Android 3.0 by many, going by a recent forum post discussing issues with Wi-Fi on Froyo, a Google Engineer has termed the next prime Android release to be version 2.3. Now, since we know that the next main Android release is Gingerbread doesn’t this mean Android 2.3 IS Gingerbread?

That brings us to Android 3.0 – which was until now widely thought to be a substantial update. It could be that either Gingerbread or Honeycomb, (which we now assume would be Android 3.0), would bring in enhanced support for Tablets. Froyo, which already runs on quite a few tablets, has been widely criticized for being not optimized for such use. So, there could be a distinct possibility of either of these two versions getting full Tablet friendly features.

That brings us to the question whether Ice cream, another major release of the future would be called Android 4.0? Or would it be Android 3.5? What do you think? Given the fact that the Gingerbread man has made his entry to the Google campus already, the official announcement is around the corner.

Confusing times ahead!
