It was reported just a couple of days ago that Whatsapp has now crossed the coveted threshold of 1 billion active users and more a month. Not one to be left in the trail, Google has announced that its mail service, Gmail also has crossed the magical figure. Gmail is currently being used by a lot of small businesses as their go-to platform for emails, and that is without a doubt a big driving point towards these numbers.
The numbers were revealed by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, at the earnings call of Alphabet. Interestingly, this is not the first time when a Google created product has boasted of a billion users, active in a month, as six other products including Search, Android, Maps, Chrome, Google Play and YouTube have already hit these heights.
To his credit, Sundar Pichai did not spend too much time blowing his trumpet and also talked about the future strategy of Google, stating that they would next be working upon AI, whereby machine learning would be the core objective. He added:
Machine learning is making our products smarter and more useful for people everyday. It powers smart reply in inbox by Gmail which suggests short responses that are relevant to an incoming e-mail. And people absolutely love this feature.
He also said that Google sees itself responsible for indexing a lot of world information and making it easily discoverable and will be pouring substantial effort into the same.
